We bought a 2 TB external. It installed easily. The one thing is the PS5 won’t run both PS4 and PS5 files from the external. You have to copy the PS5 files to the console. It’s easy to do and the copying takes less time than downloading.

I have an external on there right now. But you can't play PS5 games on it. So, in an effort to have more PS5 games accessible, this is the route you have to take.

Sweet spot in terms of value for money is 2TB. Installing is straightforward. Also cheaper to buy without a heat sink and buy that separately but that seems to have evened out since November when I bought mine (Samsung 980 Pro 2TB).

Whichever one you get the read/write speeds probably won’t get up to what’s advertised when the console tests it. But the console will tell you whether it passes or not.

Thanks for the thoughts on the sweet spot. I was kind of wondering what I needed/wanted.

Looks like 1 TB is about $180 and the 2 TB is about $300. How many games, roughly, can you fit in a TB?

Also, does this add on to the current storage or does it kind of "take it over?" So, is it in addition to what is on there or does the system become whatever you add?

I havent done it yet on PS5, but have done it dozens of times on PC's. Its pretty easy especially if you just follow those directions. For physical installation you only need a Philips head screwdriver and remove just one screw to access the storage expansion. You then just insert your new NVME drive into the bay and use the provided screw and spacer inside the bay to fasten into place. Then put the cover back on and reinsert the screw to finish up.

As far as the actual NVME storage the best way to find what you want is just to google. It will depend on how much storage and how much money you want to spend. So just search around for what fits your budget.

Here is one sight that can kinda help you look at some but there are many. Formatting is easy as the PS5 will recognize the new drive and prompt you to do what is needed next.

    https://www.ign.com/articles/best-ps5-ssd

This is the listed specs for PS5 storage drive compatibility:
    PCIe Gen4 interface
    250GB - 4TB capacity
    5,500MB/s read speed or faster
22mm width (do not go for 25mm units)
    Heatsink required (built-in or DIY)

    Thanks for the thoughts, guys.

Is the NVME the same thing as M.2?

Yes, M.2 is just the form factor that PS5 uses.

    Its additional storage.

I don't get why PS5 games can't run from an external SSD. This is really the only thing I don't like about the next gen consoles. The lack of storage and the fact that you can only play next gen games from the internal storage.

It’s because the system (and therefore the games) is built for speed and external ports just aren’t fast enough. I assume it would create performance issues if the load times do not meet system requirements.

Depends on the game; I would say huge AAA games around 15 per TB. GTA V PS5 version is 93 GB, MLBTS21 is 61GB, Battlefield V PS4 is 108GB, Cricket 22 (not AAA but the only other PS5 game I have bought) is 34GB.

We paid a lot less .. I think our 2 TB was $70 for a Seagate. Same thing we have for the PS4.

He’s talking about an external that is only good for storage and playing PS4 games. Second time in this thread he’s been missing the point of the topic
