I’d agree with you if they were in position to win their division and did what they did in September but they were always only going to win a wild card spot so blowing the wild card wouldn’t qualify in my opinion as some epic collapse. It can’t be blamed on the manager either. He was dealt a garbage hand when all of his pitching got injured and the Scherzer trade was ripped right out from under his feet. That club will be just fine if they can figure out how to stay healthy.

They had the worst record in the league in the 2nd half and finished 11 games back of the wildcard, with a record that was 4 games under .500. They had the best record in the league up until Mid June. Thats an epic collapse if I've ever seen one man idk what to tell you

Definitely a massive collapse but it was bound to happen. Tatis, machado, and cronenworth accounted for something like 77% of the teams runs batted in

You are right about the Scherzer deal, that was the moment things finally gave way, and the fact that Preller dealt for Frazier and then got no pitching help. Their team doctors, minor league staff, manager and GM all should be accountable. And so should the players who took their toys and went home 2/3 of the way through the season. Tatis looked like my kid brother in the outfield, sulking and scowling, Tommy Pham tried to beat up the base coach. Hosmer is the worst investment in team history with Myers being a close second and the swagger they had last year and up until the all star break completely evaporated. Yes, injuries played a huge part. But look at the Braves. They lost Ozuna and then Acuna and were stumbling under .500 and yet somehow through shrewd trades and the offensive explosion by supporting cast like Riley, Duval and Swansby emerging as stars, they are right back in the playoffs. That's a club with a winning mentality. The Padres do not have that. I really hope they find the right manager and the team gets back on board. They are too good to be sooooo bad.
Ps: I'm certain a 99 Tatis is coming. He's only the cover player.

Oh ok so literally the most meaningless, team-dependent, and lineup spot dependent stat there is lmao. His 122 wRC+ is his 4th best (the others being 135, 131, and 141) in a full season, out of 7 full seasons. And he’s been good defensively, but nothing crazy. He’s 8th in UZR and tied for 8th in DRS among 3B this year, as well as 7th in Fangraphs’ Def among 3B. He was astronomically better defensively in 2013, and was better in 2014, 2015, and 2016 too.

Ugh, I can't stand when people say RBIs are meaningless. If they were meaningless then why are the top players in RBIs 5 of in history 5 of the best players in history? Advanced stats are obviously valuable and I'm not arguing that rbis carry more weight. I actually agree that Machado was good not great this year. But the Padres had an awful offense this year compared to last and Machado was a bright spot. Yes, RBIs require good obp from the guys in front but to dismiss the process of successfully hitting with guys on base is fairly off center.

Yep. Look no further than Harper for a reason not to fully rely on RBI as a main point in a player discussion. Fact is if Harper had more than 2 quality teammates, he easily has 100 RBI. Its amazing that literally 3 offensive players (Harper, JT, Segura) got the Phillies as close to a playoff spot as they did. The rest of that offense is not good

I agree with that. It is definitely not the end all on great hitters. Trout for instance has never had more than 111 rbis. I certainly wouldn't say Duvall was better this year than Trout any year much less his best.
It's definitely a contextual stat. Certainly not meaningless but also not the ultimate barometer.

Yes, agreed, I jumped on the meaningless designation but I do agree it is reliant partially on the lineup around that player.
