So im here to say that used to spend mass amounts of my personal money to make a god squad in the previous titles of the show and I feel like I don't need to anymore. So this season im trying the no money spent thing and its going well for me and developing a low diamond squad is actually pretty good.
Who needs Mantle when I got the gold Griffey Jr. and his godly swing that sounds amazing when you get that perfect/perfect contact. This game is a slog when grinding out cards and I still cannot finish those multi-series evolution games for Cargo, but I will one day.
Who else went from spending money for stubs to no money spent teams?
Last year I spent entirely too much. Aside from the purchase of this game, which I pre ordered months ago, I haven't spent a dollar. Nor will I. Even if the game played perfectly, with everything going on in this world, I wouldnt. I cant justify it. Too much unknown right now. And I might just need that money for much more important things. As much as I do gripe about this game, and I undoubtedly do, I am thankful that it is here for the distraction alone. Even if it does tick me off, and it does, it takes my mind off of everything else.

I'm going no money spent also this year since my hours have been cut due to covid19. But I have to say, my team suchs. I have two diamond pitchers (smoltz and Beuhler) and two diamond players (Grandy and Sanchez) rest are golds/silvers. But it's all good, I think I get more satisfaction from building a team than buying a team.

Absolutely! You get this sense of achievement from building a team from the ground up and you also feel good that you are not spending your money on digital cards. I probably spent $300 last season when I shouldn't have, but now it all makes sense to me to be more financially responsible and not waste my money on ballin is a habit packs.

Have always gotten $100 versions and built from there. This year no exception. Was lucky enough to pull Trout 1st day so all gravy since. Only problem I have now is resisting the urge to sell Trout just to substantially upgrade a few other positions. Proper grinding continues to curb that idea tho. Plus Trout MASHES lol. Feel like I'd immediately regret selling him -- esp. if I don't do well w/ Rollins, Belli, Rutschman or whoever.
-
I haven't spent money since 17. I'll probably have a mostly gold team until May at least. I just upgrade where I can when its available.
-
I spent a ton in ‘17 and ‘18, hardly anything last year because the game was set up very generously in terms of rewards for playing. Not spent anything this year and doubt I will, starting to worry about money very seriously due to the current global crisis playing out. Hard to justify spending extra money on stubs when you have to put food on the table for your family.

1st year player here. I've got an 87 ovr team now with about 31k stubs, gold level 81. I bought the $80 version and got lucky with a bellinger pull day 1. 6 diamond infielders that could be 7 if I swapped Grandy for Gallo, plus fof Rizzo on the bench. Just a lot of solo grinding mainly (all 3 conquests done, cubs mto, etc).
NMS is totally doable

At this time of year I mostly look for cheap guys that have great defense. I know I cant hit well anyway so my game plan is keeping the score close and hoping for a break on offense. So I've got guys like Kiermaier and rookie Ozzy Smith.
-
Well I ordered the digital deluxe version and started with 30k stubs and am at 97k right now. So in 2 weeks I've earned 67k stubs. Not bad so far. I'm trying to limit my spending stubs on player cards to what's needed to complete missions and let the free packs finish my team collections as much as possible versus spending everything I earn.

His long slow topspin swing*

NMS here. Currently sitting at 350k without a single diamond pull or flipping. All diamond lineup (minus Xavier Edwards at 2nd) and rotation thanks to showdown and FoF cards. Silver 14.
Spending money on this game is silly.

I've completed the entire NL collection NMS and I'm already working on the AL, (Only a Cole and Judge away from the AL East).
I don't really mind if other people spend money though, I realize not everyone has the free time I do, it's either put in the time, (which some people don't have), or the money.

I don’t mind people spending money either, but I cant stand when NMS guys throw us flippers into the whale group because we “bought our team”. I understand why people get upset when they are completely outmatched, but I would never knock anyone for spending their money as they wish or having more time to flip

Haha even with that topspin swing he had in 17, he was the best hitter in the game imo. He absolutely MASHED for me.

It’s much more rewarding to acquire your team by playing.

If you can string along a few good event/BR runs and get to WS in ranked a few times, you can complete collections without having to spend money. Just takes some patience, skill, and a pinch of luck haha.
I completed the collection yesterday with no money spent. Haven’t even made it to WS yet or gone 12-0 in BR. I’ve also had the greatest pack luck of all time. Pulled Bellinger twice, Yelich, Judge, Lindor, Harper, Springer, and Realmuto out of free packs just from playing the game.
I did get Trout as my 12-1 reward though so that definitely helped

We all aspire to be as good at pack luck as you haha. I just need Cole to complete the AL, then I’m moving on to the NL (cardinals collection already done too). I’ve never had pack luck. I think my best pull ever (dating back to 15/16) was that FS Austin Riley that I sold for 90k stubs haha.

I've been no money spent since mlb 16 the show(mainly because I'm in high school). But this year, since covid shut down schools I've had a decent amount of time to grind and currently I'm an 88 overall at silver 15 and 60k in stubs. I would definitely recommend collecting at least 30 cards in each collection for that xp. Ranked seasons is also a great xp booster.

This company is never getting another penny out of me. That said, I did used to spend a good amount on stubs. I will give props to SDS where its due, and they are the least greedy sports video game company in the business. There are plenty of ways to obtain good cards without spending any money. My roster has only 1 gold player (minus bullpen) and I haven't spent anything aside from the initial $100 to buy the game
