So now that he is on the Padres what's the over/under on how many roster updates it takes him to go diamond?

Idk if he will. He doesn’t hit the ball hard which is not a recipe for success. But if he keeps getting hits he could get the upgrade.

still has a high average and a lot of hits with diamond defense so he should at least go to 84 this time a maybe diamond next.

I must be old (I'm 37), because I barely understand baseball anymore. Frazier has clearly found a recipe for success. He's leading the league in hits. Do I care if he his exit velo is 75mph or 105mph as long as he is getting base hits? I do not. Everybody also dismissed Nick Madrigal because he didn't get many XBH, but he was hitting .305 or something and nobody took him seriously. I'll take a roster full of Adam Fraziers and Nick Madrigals over Joey Gallo or whoever anyday.

I love scrappy players that just get hits, (One of my favorite current Cardinals is Tommy Edman, who isn't quite as good as Frazier, but similar player), but I think you are underrating Joey Gallo quite a bit here.

I feel like you are a bit too hung up on one stat, his average. He gets on base at about the same rate as Frazier and plays elite defense in the outfield. (Frazier is good defensively to).

Yeah, I don't know why I gave Gallo a hard time tbh. I actually have grown to really respect Gallo as an all-around ballplayer over the last couple years, but he was the first name that came to mind. What I should have said is that I would rather have the scrappy guy who hits nothing but singles than the guy who hits .220 with 45 HRs. Like the Adam Dunn and Adam Laroche types -- either strike outs or homers, and not much else.

And I do have an appreciation for OBP, of course, but Yasmani Grandal is a good example why it can't be looked at in a vacuum. Before he got hurt, he was hitting like .190 or something but his OBP was high because he walked a lot. And people were saying he was having an all-star season lol. His decent OBP didn't tell the full story, because he is slow as can be and would clog up the basepaths. I like a guy who walks, but I don't agree with the moneyball approach that a walk and a single are the same thing. You don't move runners over or drive guys in or put pressure in the defense with walks the same way you do with singles. Especially when you're one of the slowest guys in the league. (Also, Grandal has turned into an abysmal defensive catcher. I watch a ton of Sox games and I have been appalled this year at how bad he has been. Perhaps I'm just holding him to a higher standard because he's getting paid a small fortune, but I was not impressed with a hippopotamus who walks a lot and leads the league in catchers interference. Especially when his playing time came at the expense of Collins, who frankly could be a better all-around player if he got regular playing time).

What I'm wondering is where the padres are going to play him. I don't really follow them at all, but from what I know about their current roster there doesn't seem to be a regular spot for him. My uneducated first impression of this deal is that they traded for a player they don't really need.

I think the rumblings are that they want to trade Hosmer and move Cronenworth to 1B. I'm not sure that's realistic though because I think Hosmer's got a really fat contract, right?

Frazier will play 2nd and Cronenworth will move to 1st. Hosmer will see a lot less playing time.

I saw something about a Hosmer/Myers platoon with Frazier and Cronenworth sliding around defensively to make it work.

I'm a die hard Padre fan and watch just about every game. I have to say, I was a little surprised myself when I heard about this deal. I love the type of player Adam Frazier is, high average, good OBP, good gap power with all his doubles, but not someone that was on my radar for the Padres to go out and get. From what I've heard and read, Hosmer is going to be the odd man out with this move limiting his playing time the most. Sounds like Frazier will play some RF and LF spelling both Myers and Pham (both righties), and 2B. When playing 2B, Cronenworth would be playing 1B and putting Hosmer on the bench. A Hosmer trade that would put Cronenworth at 1B on a much more regular basis also seems possible as those rumors are starting to heat up. He does have a big contract so the Padres would probably have to pay some of it to whoever they trade him to, or maybe overpay with a few prospects to entice someone to take on Hosmers contract.
