Won't get into the whole Bryant thing..
Just want to point out that most people who work at SDS are not Padre fans and aren't from San Diego.
Just from the streams over the years, there's literally one or 2 padre fans... A couple guys from Canada, Nick is a chisox guy. Luis is Yankees.. etc..Must just be a coincidence? Hmmm. What is most who work, and how do you know. Not saying you're wrong, but you are speaking like you know because of some survey of all the folks that have a hand in creating these ratings. And, maybe you do.
Pretty easy to cherry-pick, but it really stands to reason from any sort of logic you would ever want to inject that the players from the town that creates this game are given a better shake..further would make one think it's intentional.
First off, the studio is in San Diego.. that's it... They don't hire locally. They pick developers from all over, and internally from Sony.. secondly, for the last 6 years of MLB the show, they have streamed tournaments with their team, along with content, etc.. they've been very open to who they are, what each does and also what team they cheer for, and where they're from. Almost none of them are from San Diego... Luis (Yankee fan) runs the DD team. There's a twin and Jays fan on that team if I remember too.
The head live content manager is a Marlins fan as well this post might be the dumbest thing on here, clearly OP wasn't here in 19 when ever 3rd card released was a Braves card for a total of some 56 Braves flashback cards.

The bias is there without a doubt. Funny how it took years to give Nolan Arenado respectable fielding ratings. Now that he’s not a division rival he has 99 fielding haha. When Machado has had better fielding ratings (even in a secondary SS) than Nolan did at 3B. It was laughable for awhile there.
-
We all know none of the ratings make a rats patootie in the flow of the game for the most part. It's just the symbolic favoritism and bias that should be troubling to customers that put down their hard-earned dough. In many cases to follow their favorite players and utilize them. I'm an admitted Cubs fan and Bryant is getting disrespected this year. Machado seems to not be.
Hurray that SDS, someone said whether factual or not who knows, is using the last 2 years and this year as their barometer. I'm sure they've got some logic to justify that decision. Someone else said they only adjust defense ratings once a year (for the life of me I don't understand that decision). Are defensive ratings not in the same potential for flux and fall-off as offensive? Is it because it would take a little more work?
I managed an IT shop and we were all about consistency. If we had taken the leap to put out numbers like this(hang our butts out for the world to see) we would have done our very best to make sure it didn't boomerang back on us. Maybe it's because we were a smaller company trying to rise. As opposed to a huge multi-year successful company that might be just fat and happy..content to go through the motions and have the accountants do all the work counting the revenues.. I really dunno.
Now, if you really wanted to take the time and start following up on this algorithm would it be accurate in every case? I'm going to guess pretty far from it. I'm sure many cards got ups they shouldn't and the reverse.
I don't understand it, but I'm just a humble player of the game.

When Chicago North Side Studio makes a game buy it. Until than it is what it is..

SDS definitely plays favorites. It’s not new and also not really a big deal. Yes for a few years now Padres players have been pretty inflated in some cases. There are also other examples. I remember they got a lot of flack last year for artificially inflating Luis Robert on the White Sox. And a lot of people have questioned Aaron Judge’s rating over the years as well. I’m sure there are others I can’t think off of the top of my head.

The Braves one was insane for a while there. Smoltz had like 10 cards one year. Reminded me of the year when Cepeda had like 7 cards. 17 I think it was.

In their defense, the year Arenado had his fielding ratings down, he posted pedestrian UZR and dRS numbers the previous year... he had a downyear defensively. I think people just assume he's a god defensively. Which he usually is. But not that year.

Where do you guys get this stuff? And if it came right out of the horses's mouths doesn't mean it to be written in stone. Or freaking guy didn't lie to cover up his real allegiance. Or didn't get pressured from his Boss...we'll call him the "live content manager for Regional sale's Boss" that is a SD fan.
Perhaps a conversation like this over beers at Bub's:
Boss - "You know my favorite team from childhood is having a good year. Now I don't necessarily play the game, butta, wouldn't it be cool to be a little more considerate of some of the superstars ratings? I especially like that kid Machado. And don't forget our cover boy. I mean, what would it really hurt? It's just a game and most customers will never notice. Tell you what, let me buy this next round and we'll talk about your evaluation".
Head live Content Manager - "Boss that is an excellent idea. And, I'll have a Chocolate Martini heavy on the whip cream."

They smoked Lindors rating after a bad month of baseball. From 87-81 within a month. Yikes.
I get that he is playing awful but seems as though they have allowed others to stay afloat while sinking Lindor

I don’t care what numbers you throw at me. Machado having higher fielding at SS secondary than someone who’s won a gold glove every year he’s played at 3B is insane.

If someone dropped from 87-81 in a month there should be an investigation. That defies any sort of algorithm on Earth involving baseball stats.
Lindor must have said something bad about the game. Some conspiracy accusation or something.

That's just how secondary things work though. Everyone gets penalized just a few points.
Yes I think Arenado got disrespected, but the secondary argument isn't great because it's just a set downgrade, they don't actually take the time to make different fielding stats for secondary positions.

Oh I agree on the secondary thing. I think player's secondary positions should take a larger hit in most cases...
But the fact still remains, Arenado was just slightly above average defensively for a season a couple years ago... He's back though..
Should he be 99? I dunno... Chapman is still the best defensive 3B.. -

Where’s that guy who said They wouldn’t play favorites with Tatis because Arenado says hello . his the cover boy they always do and his the hottest topic in the MLB right now all aboard the hype train .
-
Cub fan here. San Diego has lots of golds and diamonds because their players have performed well this year and the 2 previous years. There is no conspiracy.
Also, Bryant performs well in every position he plays. But there isn’t an attribute that gives him a boost to overall for versatility. Machado is a premier defender at third. Bryant does not perform at that level at any one position. But don’t worry. If he keeps his 1000+ OPS all year, he will go diamond again.

The point is they are quicker to hit Nolan’s fielding than other players. Not necessarily with fielding but hitting ratings as well. It’s not a set standard for every player is all I’m trying to say.

If anything Tatis' fielding rating is way overrated. 14 errors on the season.

You're a Cubs Fan about like I'm a fan of brussel sprouts. I've seen your posts. Nice try.
Machado goes through more extremes with his defense than the streakiest of batters. This is from an Orioles article in 2018. Machado has had some of the WORST defensive seasons in the history of the game. He's had a few very good ones. So, which player is he?
Manny Machado, who while enjoying his best-ever season at the plate is also en route to the worst defensive season on record. Not just his own worst defensive season—the worst for any player, at any position (positional adjustments aside). Machado has already reached negative-20 DRS this year—that’s the second-worst total at any position in 2018, on a list that also includes Jones and Mancini in the bottom five—and is thus on pace to hit nearly negative-40 for the season. Since 2003, the worst single-season DRS total is negative-33, for Matt Kemp in 2010; only six players have gone even 30 runs under.
