If you don't count the 1800's guys, 1913 Walter Johnson or 1923 Ruth are the correct answers.
If you want to count modern era only, 1985 Doc.
1967 Yaz did it all
are you a red sox fan? his triple crown year wasn't better than most of may's best years or mantle's triple crown year. Did he steal bases? he was barely average in the field if i recall correctly but i may be wrong on that..
He has the 4th highest bWAR and fWAR season in positional player history... And you are wrong on that. He was awesome defensively
And I hate the red sox lol
good on hating the redsox.. We finally agree on something lol.. It seems we always disagree... lol
Yes we do!!
And I disagree again lol.
Is Yaz a better player than Mays or Mantle for their career? Of course not!!!
Yaz is an inner circle HOFer, a 7 time GG, 100 WAR player..
Mantle is the greatest switch hitter ever and Mays is top 5 all time.. we aren't comparing careers here..But in a single season, other than Ruth, nobody ever led the league they were in by more categories than Yaz in '67. He was insane and did it all on a garbage team carrying them to the playoffs. Every baseball historian talks about that season. Not just sox fans..
I just disagree. It's not mantle's fault that ted williams was playing in his triple crown year and not very many great players were playing in yaz's. I know historians talk about yaz's year but they don't revere it like they do the top ten players. He was amazing that year but it wasn't a better year than mantle's. Did may's ever win the triple crown? I am thinking his 1954 season is one the all time greats... I may be wrong again tho.. I need to look at may's..
May's is a weird one. His obp was never really high because he didn't walk alot. He swung and put the ball in play. I did go back and look into his better years but i don't think any were better than the yaz one. So i concede to you on may's. We are at a stalemate on the mantle year tho.
I just like to point out too. I absolutely love Mickey Mantle. I've watched and read any material on his career as I could. Absolute baseball god in my eyes. But Yaz just has that one thing... That's all.
A healthy Mick is the greatest in history imo... Unfortunately it barely happenedyeah unfortunatley it was his own doing. The drinking and the knees. He is definately the most talented baseball player to every play even if he didn't have the best career.

I'm not going by the fact Yaz won a triple crown.. that's just a dumb accolade for finishing first in AVG, HR and RBI. 2 of those 3 being overrated stats...
He finished first in runs, hits, HR, RBI, AVG, OBP, SLG, TB, won the GG, and did it all during a downturn in hitting in baseball and also played on a bad team.. hence the 4th highest WAR season of all time...Mantle and Mays obviously had huge seasons too, Mantle back to back 56 and 57 actually were identical.. you could say his 57 was better (in WAR it was .1 better lol) Mantle would be top 5 if he didn't wear down his body with drinking and he had terrible knees.. Mays was elite for 20+ years... Longevity..
The war stat is dumb in my opinion because it doesn't take into account great players getting hurt and missing time. Yaz would not have led in all those categories if frank robinson didn't miss a month due to injury. Ted williams was still the best hitter in the mantle years. That's why i look at what the numbers actually were and try to compare them that way.
Mantle wins in every category. Runs 132 to 112, obp .464 to .418, slg .705 to .622, ops 1.169 to 1.040, ops+ 210 to 193, tb 376 to 360. He also won in the three major categories. Again it's not mantle's fault that williams existed and was not hurt and was still great to lead in a few categories.
WAR compares based on the league average and what a replacement player would be for that year... Teddy being around barely affects that... Not sure what you mean here...
Yes, Ted Williams was a better "hitter" than pretty much anyone... Mickey was 5 tool. Obviously a better fielder and baserunner..But the point is how much better the player was than everyone else in that year, and Yaz was better than the average in '67 than Mick was in '56...
Also, someone getting injured and missing time should only hurt their case lol. Not help an argument against a player who played every game
Also, Ted's peak was a decade before Mickey...

Arod 40/40 and mvp seasons for both Texas and Yankees deserves to be in this convo. Hate him all u want but arguably one of the greatest all around players

Yeah and i think bonds 40/40 year would be in convo too but his arm would suck. My reason for the conversation is for cards that we have or have had. If arod gets in the game then that will be a new conversation to be had. He was a 5 tool player like mantle. I don't remember his splits for that year tho.

His best was in 2000. And not in top 20 or so seasons simply because when he was putting up ungodly numbers, so were many many hitters...

League averages don't mean much if three of the better hitters go down to injury or the league is having a down year. I wasn't talking about williams in the war stat. I was talking about him leading in some of the categories that yaz led the league in. I still think if frank didn't get hurt that he would have led in a couple of those stats.

If you're still putting up enormous numbers when nobody else is, yes it means a lot!!
Yaz didn't get the memo that it was a down year... Making his year even more valuable.. lol

Yeah. The entire NL agreed to give Jeff Kent a base runner for every AB and an easy MVP award.
