I enjoy DD to a point, but it is by far the worst mode available to play.

I like playing against others, even though I have a losing record in RS it's a fun experience (for the most part). What I don't like is everything else that comes with it.
First, it takes too much focus away from other aspects of the game, and also forces the devs to consider monetization when creating features.
Secondly, it requires the players to either 1) grind A LOT or 2) spend money to constantly and consistently keep up with other players as far as your card collecting goes.
Thirdly (is that a word?) it tends to foster a toxic environment where people are quick to lash out on others.
I will admit it accomplishes it's goals, that is to bring in post release money.

Idk, I love it, even though I mostly play offline. I’ve spent $0 this year (not bragging and I certainly haven’t done all the collections) , just love the collecting aspect of it mostly. I agree the whole thing can lead to toxicity, but I have yet to see an online sports game where a significant % of people are not highly toxic. Just don’t participate in the BS and it’s a ton of fun.
Long story short, it’s my favorite mode, and it’s easy to avoid the toxicity if you want or need to.

I want to play, but I've read I'll need to get some diamonds first to even be competitive. May take awhile at my pace.

That's the other part, matchmaking makes little sense.
You should have to choose your pitching and batting interfaces before the game matches you to another player.
The matchmaking should be based on more than rating. It should consider your overall level, your record (wins vs loses) your preferred pitching and hitting methods, and more...

Diamonds are quite easy to come by. Topps Now, Player programs, inning bosses (1 free per inning at 350k xp), the 42 TA rewards (all earned only). Very easy to build a diamond team with a little bit of time.
Will you have Chipper and all the top end goon squad players? No. But you dont need them to be competitive unless you're hanging out in WS.
Otherwise do the events/BR. BR is an even field with drafting teams so it doesnt matter what cards you own and every event has different rules that prevent 99 overall teams usually.

My only issue is that everyone seems to have the same team. Admittedly I'm new to this series but there isn't much variety in players to get, at least quality ones. This game should be flooded with options for people to use.

There's a lot of variety in the players you can have, it's still early in the games cycle so there's fewer options. As the game progresses there will be many 99 players to choose from that fit your playstyle and team build.
That said, there's always going to be a Meta in games, regardless of what they are. There are a finite number of great players right now and if you're trying to compete online at the highest levels, you have to use the current best cards.

I would be happy if the game matched me up against people who play the game the same amount of minutes per day as I do, not a top 50, World Series, or BR goon. Lol

Hmmm. The grind they put in is what makes it the best ultimate team game. What they will drop Friday is what keeps it ticking.
Online is pretty bad tbh. My last 3 HOF games are a combined score of 3-2 over 22 innings. (I am 2-1 lol)
