Tug McGrawI was just typing one up for the Phillies and looking at what my list would be and what yours is I'd assume I'm younger than you because I have never seen any of those guys play but I still had Schmidt and Carlton on mine but my I had Rollins (my favorite player of all time) and the last spot was my tough one. The question does say success so it makes my think of Hamels because he was a WS MVP but Howard and Utley are tough to leave off for me. It's a fun question for sure.
I had a hard time leaving the 08 players off the list. McGraw closing the game for the 1980 championship is a huge moment. I didn't get to see Ashburn play, but he was one of the few bright spots on many bad teams and stuck around as a team broadcaster afterwards. That's where my memories of him come from.
I was thinking about putting Harry K on mine because he was the voice of the Phillies for my childhood.

As a fellow Rox fan, I’d substitute Eric Young for Bichette.
Tulo never really had major health issues until he left CO. He should definitely overtake Vinny Castillo.Back in 93 just remember going to games and watching Bichette between innings in right field at Mile High entertain the fans with random goofiness, have loved him ever since. Not to mention how clutch he was so often. Still remember my fave line about his defense though... Like an elephant on roller skates lol. And no way anyone should overtake Vinny, that dude was the model of consistency during his prime, always with 130ish RBI and 40ish homers, and humble as hell. EY will always have a special place for sure though.

If I had a draft and had my choice off any player ever I'm not taking Ruth, I'm taking a healthy Mantle.. If you are going by that metric for hitting alone I believe Bonds is a tick higher. I also made the argument because you said best player not best hitter. There are some like Mantle and Mays who had the speed and crazy defense. IMO that factors into best player taking into account the other facets. Again if you said best hitter I would agree. I will not agree all around player goes to Ruth. Don't forget about Ted Williams also. He lost 5 years I'm his prime fighting in a real WAR. He might have passed everyone in most categories if we talking straight hitting. When best ever comes up I take into account the overall body of work brother.

Now I will bring up the players are better now than then debate. Babe Ruth was obviously not as good as a pitcher as degrom or hitter as Soto. I don’t think that comes into play though. Can we really call Babe the greatest player when he wasn’t. Basketball doesn’t call wilt chamberlain the best. They call him the most dominant. Babe isn’t the best he’s the most dominant.

Isnt that what WAR is for? It allows you to statistically compare players across eras, by how much better they are versus an average replacement player. We arent talking about whose stuff was better pitching-wise, or who ran quicker. We are talking about who is the overall best player (performance) of all time.
Ruth has nearly every important statistical category in his favor, including being #1 in WAR.

So I got this idea while listening to the Starting 9 Podcast. Pick the four players from your favorite team that had the biggest impact/most success in their time there.
As a Rangers fan my Mt. Rushmore would have to be:
Nolan Ryan
Ivan "Pudge" Rodriguez
Michael Young
Adrian BeltreReal Yank fan here. Started in 87 and see some horrible teams. Here I go,
1-Mickey Mantle
2-Lou Gehrig
3-Joe DiMaggio
And a little curveball. Just because of the clutchness and always getting that big hit or defensive play when it mattered most
5-Derek JeterHow the Hell do you have a Yankees list and omit Babe Ruth? Hes the best player in baseball history, let alone Yankees history.
History? There were better all around players than Ruth brother. You can make the argument about being the best hitter in history. I got the reaction I wanted though I know someone was gonna mention that. Trust me if Mantle didn't seriously damage his body specifically his knees his HR #s might have been higher than Ruth's. Also was a switch hitter and a 5 Tool player
My man, Ruth is #1 in WAR all time. He also was the best LHP in baseball for a 2 year stretch. He had a pitching WAR of 8.8 and 6.5 in 1916 and 1917. Name someone else that had a pitching WAR of 8.8 and a batting WAR of 14.1 in their careers. You cant.
He completely redefined the game. Every HR he hit between #138 and #714 was the new record, and he did it while having a career batting average of .342.
The House that Ruth Built.
His WAR is crazy I know. I agree with you as well. I didn't add him because IMO thats a given. His WAR is like 162 or something and if you add pitching its like 180 or something. If I had a draft and had my choice off any player ever I'm not taking Ruth, I'm taking a healthy Mantle.. If you are going by that metric for hitting alone I believe Bonds is a tick higher. I also made the argument because you said best player not best hitter. There are some like Mantle and Mays who had the speed and crazy defense. IMO that factors into best player taking into account the other facets. Again if you said best hitter I would agree. I will not agree all around player goes to Ruth. Don't forget about Ted Williams also. He lost 5 years I'm his prime fighting in a real WAR. He might have passed everyone in most categories if we talking straight hitting. When best ever comes up I take into account the overall body of work brother.
The best player argument is exactly why I brought up his pitching. He had 94 wins! Career ERA of 2.28. That's better than Jacob deGrom, in nearly the same amount of innings. To me, factoring in his pitching is much more substantial than fielding prowess when it comes to defense.
Now I will bring up the players are better now than then debate. Babe Ruth was obviously not as good as a pitcher as degrom or hitter as Soto. I don’t think that comes into play though. Can we really call Babe the greatest player when he wasn’t. Basketball doesn’t call wilt chamberlain the best. They call him the most dominant. Babe isn’t the best he’s the most dominant.
Isnt that what WAR is for? It allows you to statistically compare players across eras, by how much better they are versus an average replacement player. We arent talking about whose stuff was better pitching-wise, or who ran quicker. We are talking about who is the overall best player (performance) of all time.
Ruth has nearly every important statistical category in his favor, including being #1 in WAR.
What I’m saying is that Ruth would not have the best war now if he played but mike trout would if he played back then
