Banks- because of course Mr. Cub is on it
Santo- one of the most beloved cubs of all time as a player and broadcaster
Sosa- steroids or not he was one of the most popular players in Cub history
Lester- he was that big signing that let all us Cub fans know that it was time to go win a world series

Adrian BeltreHow do you not put Juan Gonzalez on that list fam. Had about 4oo Hrs and about 1300 RBIs playing most his career for the Rangers. He was an absolute MONSTER.

I love Chase - he's one of my favorites from the 08 squad, but he just doesn't have that lasting impact that the others do. An amazing player for sure, though.

The question does say success so it makes my think of Hamels because he was a WS MVP but Howard and Utley are tough to leave off for me. It's a fun question for sure.
I had a hard time leaving the 08 players off the list. McGraw closing the game for the 1980 championship is a huge moment. I didn't get to see Ashburn play, but he was one of the few bright spots on many bad teams and stuck around as a team broadcaster afterwards. That's where my memories of him come from.

Ruth is on the Mount Rushmore of MLB, I know the Yankees have a ton to choose from, but Ruth is the one everyone knows need to be there.

As a fellow Rox fan, I’d substitute Eric Young for Bichette.
Tulo never really had major health issues until he left CO. He should definitely overtake Vinny Castillo.Back in 93 just remember going to games and watching Bichette between innings in right field at Mile High entertain the fans with random goofiness, have loved him ever since. Not to mention how clutch he was so often. Still remember my fave line about his defense though... Like an elephant on roller skates lol. And no way anyone should overtake Vinny, that dude was the model of consistency during his prime, always with 130ish RBI and 40ish homers, and humble as hell. EY will always have a special place for sure though.

His WAR is crazy I know. I agree with you as well. I didn't add him because IMO thats a given. His WAR is like 162 or something and if you add pitching its like 180 or something. If I had a draft and had my choice off any player ever I'm not taking Ruth, I'm taking a healthy Mantle.. If you are going by that metric for hitting alone I believe Bonds is a tick higher. I also made the argument because you said best player not best hitter. There are some like Mantle and Mays who had the speed and crazy defense. IMO that factors into best player taking into account the other facets. Again if you said best hitter I would agree. I will not agree all around player goes to Ruth. Don't forget about Ted Williams also. He lost 5 years I'm his prime fighting in a real WAR. He might have passed everyone in most categories if we talking straight hitting. When best ever comes up I take into account the overall body of work brother.

The best player argument is exactly why I brought up his pitching. He had 94 wins! Career ERA of 2.28. That's better than Jacob deGrom, in nearly the same amount of innings. To me, factoring in his pitching is much more substantial than fielding prowess when it comes to defense.
