Exploring my choices in franchise day 1 for the first time.

I've been playing the show since 09. Usually I wait for osfm then start my franchise with the red sox. Play along with the season making the same or similar trades as they do throughout the season and see how I stack up with them as I play the games. Then I get into making my own choices and front office moves in the off season going into year 2. From there I obviously make all choices in my franchise.
With this years game 2 things are different. 1 we have full minors day one. And 2 the coronavirus has delayed the real regular season. As such I decided that this year I would make choices for my franchise day one instead of following along with the regular season. If I had to wait til the season starts with the delay to play franchise I'd go crazy.
The first thing I did (which I've never done before) is alter my roster before entering franchise mode. The first and only thing I did to alter my roster is add free agent Puig to my roster. I then started franchise mode. Mid spring I immediately flipped Puig and a couple minor leaguers to SD for Wil Myers and a couple pitching prospects mirroring the trades that were discussed a month or so ago that never actually took place.
It definitely feels weird to be making moves freely this early on in the game but it also feels fun to make my own choices early on.
Anyway the experience has got me wondering how do you all play franchise? Do you follow along with your teams season or do you start making your own choices and moves from day one? Do you play with a default or downloaded roster? Do you alter your roster at all before entering franchise mode? I'm interested to see how everyone plays. Happy playing everyone.

I think it's a combination of both, depending how satisfying your favorite team is in real life. For me, I've been waiting for months to play the White Sox lineup that I've been picturing. The default rosters in 2019 for starting a franchise did not have a legit Eloy Jimenez or Luis Robert, for example. The problem right now with the virus activity/season postponement, is that the White Sox lineups are like their best guess of how Opening Day would have went, but it's not the lineup I've been waiting a year for. So, I had to make adjustments like calling up Nick Madrigal to play 2B instead of Leury Garcia. The rotation is Carlos Rodon at third while Cease and Kopech are in the Pen. I would be ok with that, but in real life that's up in the air at this point because of inury.
I like to basically mimic my Sox season, but in a successful way haha. For example, I changed Tim Anderson to be an outstanding fielder because he was making at least 1 error every game.
Also, the default lineups for 2020 don't have Luis Robert starting, but on the bench for Leury Garcia. I just can't have that...

I hear ya on that. I'm a few games away from calling up Cal Quantril who I got in that fictional trade with SD because the back end of my rotation has been dreadful. though I am off to an 11-7 second place start. I'll probably call him up during my next home stand to see how he does.

I play all-time roster for every team franchise. It's so much more exciting for me as a baseball historian and lover of the game. I have my own roster that I have created which is ever changing. I just love the match-ups Koufax facing Bonds, Pedro facing DiMaggio, Aaron facing Jose Fernandez. Every team has studs on the squad and if someone gets hurt it's just next man up with another all-star or HOFer to take his place. I've done this every year since '15 and having the option to carry over rosters this year is huge. I love creating players of the past and reading up on their bios to make sure all their attributes are accurate as possible. It's definitely right up my alley as a baseball fan. I've been playing baseball games since 1990 Earl Weaver Baseball so it bring back memories

Man I'm playing with the Rangers and just finished the series against the White Sox, and Tim Anderson made at least one error every game if not two. I thought that was interesting.

Yea, it's crazy. They made him have the defense skills of a little leaguer. But, based on his whole "leading the league in errors" last year, seems to be pretty accurate to real life. It's just not a real life I want to portray in my video games

I usually don't play my MLB team at all in Franchise mode. I GM the team and handle all the scouting and transactions and all that and sim all the games. I occasionally play individual prospects with Player Lock on, especially during all star appearances or playoffs. My main franchise is in the year 2055 and is a juggernaut -- almost all A potential players, winning the world series about once every three years just simming.
This year, I am also playing a 2020 franchise in real time in lieu of actual baseball.
Either way, I never compare to real world transactions. The whole fun for me is proving I can GM a team much better than the real world. I'm actually surprised I haven't received any offers from a real MLB team yet.
