Perhaps the display for your opponent isn't displaying correctly?
So, have you ever seen your PCI hit a HR when not on the ball? -
I think it's much more likely that the feedback shown is incorrect as opposed to opponents hitting bombs on poor input. I know I certainly haven't had any outrageous PCI placement bombs work in my favor. Some foul balls where I'm not even close? Sure. But nothing huge.

I’ve seen it go both ways, I’ve been rewarded and I’ve seen my opponent get it too. Is it the PCI or is it the feedback we’re getting?

I like to match the PCI within the release point of the pitch, screenshot it and then post it to Instagram with heavy editing.
