Infield question for those of you that played

OK so, my understanding is that with a runner on first, the fielder opposite to the handedness of the batter covers second on a DP or stolen base attempt. So lefty batter=SS covers, righty batter=2B covers, unless the ball is hit at him, in which case, the other covers. Right?
In a game vs cpu just now, with the runner going, SS takes off toward the bag and ignores a ball hit right at him, allowing it to go into CF. Instead of a double play it becomes first and third no out.
So is this a perfectly executed hit and run by the cpu or a botched infielder mistake?

Generally, yes. But when there's a runner on 1st, it's decided by the pitcher and middle infielders. When you watch a game and the pitcher does the "hang loose" sign with his thumb to his mouth, whichever middle infielder he's pointing his pinky to will cover 2nd.
It can be verbal too. 2B or SS saying "I got your comebacker" to the pitcher.

I see. I thought the “hang loose” sign was the pitcher talking to the 1B about getting over on a ground ball to that side.
