Cross Platform Play between Gens/Systems

Since The Show website wasn't extremely clear on this, I figured I'd ask on the forums. I have a PS5 and my friend has an XBOX One. Since these are cross gen and cross platform, is online cross play available? Or is it one of those things where PS5 can only cross-play with PS4 (since its same family) and XBOX Series X/S (since it's the same generation)? They made it seem like its only cross-play available between families of consoles from different generations, and I can't seem to get a straight answer anywhere before buying it. Thanks!
