Can not start game - Xbox Series X

Yesterday; game worked fine. This morning I went to launch it and the "press any button to enter" screen comes up. However the game won't acknowledge my button press to play. It just sits... then eventually starts a demo game. I can press start to interrupt that. Then I end up at the main menu screen where the game says it can't currently connect to the server and my controller is unresponsive. If I press the Xbox guide button the guide opens. My controller works just fine.
This morning I deleted all my game data, reinstalled the game from scratch and it worked fine. Came back to play this evening and I've got the same issue again.
I need a solution to this, or I guess I'm heading for a refund with MS. This is a joke. I shoudln't have to delete the game and reinstall it everytime I want to play.
