Conquest the first night is usually the most popular choice. It’s has pretty good free cards and packs every year. Its three inning games vs the CPU. Probably watch a quick video first but it’s ez.
After a few games go look at “Team affinity” and see all the progress your making with the cards you got, then choose which teams cards you really want to unlock and get some players from those teams (all free btw)
Then go to the XP path and see how far you are and how many amazing cards are in it (again free)
Then go back and finish conquest.
Do what you want with your $, you can only buy stubs, stubs buy packs or cards, the cards are the smart option, the packs are the other option.
If you do get a Diamond, see what collecting the whole team rewards you in “collections” then look in collections for more fun.
Then play the game until you can buy all the cards, complete all the collections, and then come back next year.

Thanks for the reply! Seems like that breaks it down. Recently in Madden they added team affinity and it was rewarding to build an entire team around one (or two) squads (i.e. an entire squad of Packers or Chiefs players). Is Diamond Dynasty similar (Favorite team is Boston - so build with a bunch of Red Sox)? Or is it better to have guys from all teams?
-
Entering my 2nd year of the show after playing mut 19/20 pretty hard.
Packs are fun, I love them, but like madden the house wins and I don't recommend spending your stubs on them.
Here's some other random stuff
-
Learn the auction house and don't take the "sell now" options
-
Figure out your goals. After playing 20 for 2 weeks I decided that I wanted to complete the LS collection and get Mantle on my team. In the mean time I also did a ta or 2 for cards to use in the mean time. I'll likely take that approach again.
2a. Completing team/div/league collections in the ls gets you lots of nice NAT cards and stubbs that can be used for other collections later in the season.
-
Have fun. If you want to spend $100 on 100 packs, you should live your best life.
-
Conquest is a great way to get free packs. I did the USA map around 9x last year and even pulled Trout out of the 10 pack reward 1 time.
-
-
Thanks Dan! Appreciate the info. I tend to avoid packs in Madden for the most part. Seems like it's always best to just buy the cards you want. I'm sure it takes time to figure out - just like anything else. But trying to get as much as a head start as possible; so i'll definitely be booting up the game at midnight on Thursday!
-
I would honestly stay away from packs. Best thing to do is to play the market and if you want a card out a buy order in for it. You’ll spend more trying to hit a Diamond then you would just getting the Diamond on the marketplace with packs.
I open packs to fill the common bronze silvers. That I don’t want to sit there buying. But they are honestly a waste in terms of return value.
-
Also I used to start with my garbage team in ranked but I’m not doing that this year. I’m going to try and BR goon it the first week before I put a dollar into the game.

Also know the market prices will be inflated until the actual release date due to supply and demand. If you’re looking to spend money get your stubs and wait to buy on the market. They also have stub sales during the yr where the $100 and $50 are half off, won’t happen for a few months though. Check out some videos on YouTube from some of the content creators. They’ll end up giving rundowns on what to do first. Movie gaming came out with one today. Enjoy!

For that reasoning alone I forked over for Deluxe this year instead of MVP (Jackie for 2021). Might as well have 6 golds + 2 diamonds to start the grind. Seems steep for the initial cost, but will be a lot less tempted to play roulette with packs. Control during launch fever is cheaper.

DD is much better than MUT. The Show doesn’t have the scam that is training. No chemistry nonsense & no time sucks like weekend league. This game will be like a breath of fresh air for you.

I agree with this 100%. When I came over from MUT last year I was so happy with the incredible varied content and the ability to grind for a legit competitive team. Watch some vids on getting started efficiently and welcome aboard.
-
Agreed with the above. MUT has nothing on DD. All the best cards can be obtained by grinding the game both online and offline. Just stay away from Showdown until you are decent at the game, that mode can induce rage.

If you get the Deluxe Edition, and you plan to play a fair amount and learn how the Marketplace works, you seriously don’t need to spend any more money. Flipping on the Market will earn stubs while you’re not playing, and from playing you’ll get stubs, packs and players. This will be my 8th year, and beyond buying the game itself each year I have spent a total of $20 on stubs in that whole span. To their credit, SDS don’t soak you for your money like they easily could.
About your other question, build the team you want to build. All Red Sox, all-time greats, a team of pure speedy switch-hitters, a team with catchers at all positions... it’s up to you. Most important is that you have fun with it because you’re going to be spending a lot of time with those guys.
And find the cards that play best for you, which may not be the best cards. A lot of people (including me) spent a lot of time unlocking Mickey Mantle or other guys last year only to find they couldn’t hit with them. Yet I could absolutely rake with cards from Didi Gregorius, Adalberto Mondesi or Jacoby Ellsbury. So those guys played, Mantle and Ruth rode the bench.

Thanks for all the replies everyone! Great tips & info for sure. Release week is here. Just a few more days

I find flipping on the market to be deadly boring and not fun. If I wanted a stock market or investment simulator I would buy one.
That being said, it is a perfectly valid way to make stubs if you find flipping cards enjoyable.

I played Madden a lot, but never in the MUT mode. Would you guys be able to describe what the grind for cards was like in MUT (in case I ever consider buying a football game again)? -

You are rewarded based on how many games you win. In Solo Battles you have to play the computer in full length games & win 12 per week but you can only do it in 4 game intervals on Monday, Wednesday & Friday. It is a mind numbing grind & an absolute timesuck. The few events they have where you can get cards for completing a bunch of solos are always for just a part of what’s needed for a collection to get a good card. Like say you need 10 of a certain card to get a 95 overall card - You are only ever rewarded 1 or 2 in the solos & then the rest you have to buy. It is awful, EA is about nothing but greed.

Agree, it’s boring but it’s an effective and profitable way to grow your stub count. Sometimes I just buy/sell now when I really want a card but I learned to be patient tbh, I started flipping late in the cycle of TS20 and that’s when I started to see my account above 1M

I haven’t played MUT in 2 years. The Show saved my video game ultimate team addiction and you don’t have to spend money to compete like in Madden and 2k. Have fun man and always come here for help

I’m loving seeing this over and over on this post. Glad to know that MLB The Show is viewed as much better than MUT. MUT finally killed me towards the Christmas last year. It just started getting worse and worse. Looking forward to The Show after seeing all these replies to this post.

Not sure if someone answered this one yet...but for competitive purposes, its generally better to have a mix. Some streamers will do theme teams later in the year for variety but you're best teams are likely to have players from any number of different teams.
Not to say you can't do an all BOS squad. Just that you might find better options than a Hernandez in CF or whatever BOS has as a rotation/bullpen. Keep in mind a card with juiced attributes doesn't automatically mean success either. Swing animations, pitch types and user skill matter and sometimes cards just seem to play above or below their numbers. Find what works for you.
I've been that guy who plays ranked with a bunch of LS golds and a preorder diamond against a day 1 all-diamond team and forced them to quit. I've also been that guy with the diamonds who loses the the lesser team on paper.
Half the fun is finding and using cards you like and not worrying about which ones the best imo.
