Does it matter ? I have seen people saying third base defense does not matter? Are they correct ? I ask the question because I have seen my gold defense players not making plays at third base. I am wondering if putting my newly acquired Finest Nolan Arenado at third base would help solve the issue.

I think the answer is pretty straightforward in the sense that it does matter, especially the reaction rating is important. Finest Manny Machado makes all the plays and then some, he gets all the animations and truly feels like a brick wall over there.

The reason why people say it doesn't matter, is because guys with gold, silver and even bronze badges will make the casual plays as well, and since not every defensive play in a 9 inning game is a play for the 3B, it's sort of a trade off where people don't mind having a lesser defensive 3B if they bring a great bat.

The answer will depend on the player playing the game.

I'll use the example of catcher.... Does defense behind the plate matter? Not overly. Plenty of people use Foxx back there with his bronze badge and weak arm. But a few dropped 3rd strikes that go through the wickets, or a few 60 speed guys stealing bags on you and all of a sudden his defense feels like it's killing your chances.

My rule of thumb is as long as he makes the plays he's supposed to make, and also surprises me once in awhile then that player is good enough for me. Bronze left me wanting more at 3rd, but silver seems to be fine.

I've used diamond players at 3rd too, and while there's a noticable difference on the rare plays where a defensive rating matters, the fact is that your player gets 4 at bats every game, and maybe 1 critical defensive opportunity every 2 or 3 games.

Only you can decide what outweighs the other for you.

Glad to hear that Finest Machado plays like a diamond fielder on defense. Finest Arenado should play like a brick wall as well on defense. Like you said the reaction rating is crucial as well. I have noticed that players with a reaction rating under 85 can make errors on routine plays. It happened to me with MVP Cal Ripkens. The guy is a diamond fielder but because he has a reaction ration of 84, he is prone to making mistakes on infield plays requiring quick reaction time.

I’m a bad pitcher so my opponents put the ball regularly in play. I need every outs I can get. Many of third base players with gold fielding badges and below cannot get the job consistently. They don’t make mistakes but they don’t seem to react well to hard even slow grounders from time to time. It’s like they don’t have the animations to play a brick wall third base. If putting a diamond fielder with a reaction rating of at least 85 can get the job consistently at third base, I will be happy.

Fair enough. If you're having trouble with Arenado try out Lindor. He has 99 fielding and a better swing IMO.

Good to hear. I will try to unlock him if Arenado does not get the job done. Or I will simply buy Manny Machado. Many people seem like that card.

I just want to report that Finest Arenado made a mistake on a routine play costing me 2 runs today. Third base fielding is a joke in this game.

Honestly is there anything people won't complain about?

Errors happen. Even the best fielders in the game past or present made errors. If you're expecting someone to make a clean play on every ball hit in their direction then you're expecting way too much

I seriously have not seen your name around here at all until yesterday, and already this is the second “complaint about complainers” thread you commented on.

There are legitimate flaws with the gameplay and many on here have been observing them get worse from year to year.

I hope you are planning to add more to the community than just showing disdain for the frustration of other players on here.

Personally I don’t like using anything under silver at any position and I prefer gold or better. I hate errors.

Anything below silver is not something you should have at the hot corner, in my experience. I currently have Miggy at third base, and he has silver defense. While he can't catch every line drive that comes his way, he has stopped the ball for me and made a few good plays—but the main thing is that he hasn't made any fielding errors yet for me.

Third basemen (especially people who have third base as a second position) who have bronze defense or below are very clumsy. I had Foxx there for a time and he would make throwing errors or he'd be too slow to get the ball to first base.
