Not trying to be a Debbie Downer but I’m seeing all this speculation about Negro League cards in The Show following today’s news.

I’m struggling to see exactly how today’s news makes these guys suddenly much more likely to be in DD. Obviously SDS either hasn’t been interested in getting their rights or hasn’t been able.

Can someone explain why they are suddenly more likely to be in DD now? Are they now added to some pool of former MLB players that SDS can collectively sign to obtain their rights? Or what?

I know nothing but Im pretty sure it has to do with their "rights". And now that they are classified as MLB we should be able to negotiate their "rights" to be in the game

I still see a problem here. What team would they be on? ( the ones who never played in MLB). DD is based on a card belonging to a team. Free Agent be my guess at possible solution

Would SDS not have been able to negotiate with them if they were separate from the MLB? Possible I suppose but idk if I buy that

The same licensing firm that owns the rights to Ruth, Cy, Honus, and Walter Johnson has owned the rights to Satchel Paige and Three Finger Brown for years. I don't know how being "officially recognized" by MLB affects the legalese, but as the timeframe was pre-MLBPA, my guess is nothing changes.

A bunch of the Negro Leagues guys are in the HOF and that hasn't translated to them appearing in game.

This is what I mean, explained more thoroughly. Since they’ve been in the HOF and thus associated with the MLB, I assume they’ve been up for grabs in terms of rights acquisition.

I don’t see how today’s news does anything about that except perhaps raising awareness. Which isn’t at all trivial. I think SDS has learned today that a lot of us would really like to see these guys in DD, which could go a long way.

Sounds cool... I would like to see a "Satchel" Paige card, as I read that he was a phenomenal pitcher and fan favorite about everywhere he went...or even a Jackie card when he was young and playing for the KC Monarchs.

The reason, I believe, was to recognize the stats as legitimate stats in MLB record books. A more important distinction than appearing in this game. (Though would be neat to see some appear here).

Yeah that’s how I understood it. And I don’t get how that necessarily increases the chances of them appearing in the game, as many seem to think it does.

    Yeah FA, that's easy.

Or they could create a Negro Leagues page the same way the Yankees or the Marlins have one.
Easier way to keep track of them and easier for SDS to set up a collection for it with a desirable collection reward.

Don't see why that can't be a possibility either. Kind of trivial though, just getting the cards in the freaking game is much more important.

It means nothing, SDS would still have to obtain the rights to use any player likeness for anyone not currently in the MLBPA.
