Controlling baserunner in online play

With several baserunners, in online play (Ranked Seasons), I cannot manage to control a specific baserunner. I frantically point the Left stick towards the runner but never get the 'diamond to separate from the center' indicating a single baserunner is controlled. Weird thing is that I have no problem doing this in offline play.
Has anyone else encountered this and have any tips?

Is your baserunning set to Default?

Thanks, not by my PS4 right now but I have checked and double checked that my setting should be Left stick to choose runner and buttons to assign a base to run to.

Tip: switch to classic (buttons).

This is the way to do it. Much easier than making sure you're pushing the stick in the right direction.
