And for people to think he wont make millions without football is just silly. He will be fine
Because his dad made millions playing baseball. MAYBE 5% of players come from independently wealthy families.
The other 95% came from nothing and don't have their parent's nest egg to fall back on. They're all still on rookie and UDFA contracts making (relatively) next to nothing.

yes thats why its not they're job to make that statement. We need the likes of Brady, Mahomes, or Wilson etc.. who will be fine without football. Plenty of other opportunists for revenue for a star that big

The fact that all they focus on is police brutality and police reform is a little mind boggling. There has to be accountability on all sides. No doubt about it that those that are put in charge of law and order need to have the very best training and be held to a higher standard, but to Totally ignore the other side of things and paint all Police as bad loses a lot of people. These athletes, and I don't blame them because its not their responsibility to "fix" the seemingly unfixable, will get on a stage and say some words and then go right back to their luxurious lives in their gated communities. While the real world continues to spin. Spending time and effort on police reform, or the craziness of de-funding police, literally does nothing at all to stop crime from happening. They need to spend equally as much time going into these areas where crime is happening most and do what they can to help people out mentally, physically, and financially so that they feel they have options. Lebron needs to use his platform for more than fanning the flame too. He spends a lot of time and money helping people, but then goes and hurts them mentally by acting as if police and white people are hunting black people. Creates a massive mistrust and divide among people, and it is just blatantly not true.
-
But if they make that statement, what happens to (picks a name out of a hat) Jody Forster?
A 2nd year player out of Valdosta State still on a practice squad contract. If Mahomes/Brady/Wilson and their class sits out, the league shuts down. Players like Forster have nowhere to go, no alternate methods of promotion/opportunies like the others, and no vast fortune to fall back on. And if/when the league would ever restart, he's replaced in a heartbeat by a younger, hungrier rookie.
Players on the Elite Tier might think they're helping by shutting everything down. But really, all they're doing is hurting players like Forster. And there's EXPONENTIALLY more Forsters in the league than there are Mahomes, Bradys and Russells.

My man I love it. You are exactly right. They need to have that uncomfortable conversation within they're own communities as well and not just turn a blind eye. I love the fact of police working with them and trying to figure out solutions instead of tearing it all down

I fully support their right to protest and they have good reason. I however also feel like just like every other protest i have ever seen, it will fall on deaf ears. All it does [censored] off racist pricks so they can go out and act more racist. At least that is what i see in white middle America. I wish there was a way that actually worked. I mean The Reds and Brewers didn't play Wednesday, they played 2 games on Thursday. That did nothing to hurt baseball or the ownership of those teams, you know rich white guys. So sort of like what the OP is saying to really have effect you need to protest the entire season, making up the games do not really make a difference.
Anyway, that is my two cents, i don't know how these things look in more liberal areas of the country, all i see is this red county in a purple state. I hope to see change in my lifetime, but i do not have high hopes, in my 40+ years we as a nation are only dividing more and not coming together.

If you protest rest of season owners will take the money from the players and not pay them

Then the players will have to get jobs like the rest of us "normal people". Money shouldn't be your motivation for good morals and some of these athletes/actors/politicians are guilty of this. We will have baseball without MLB bet my life on it

Ahmaud Arbery was hunted by white people. Elijah McClain was harassed by police while walking and listening to music. He died from that encounter. Officers even posed for smiling pictures later that night.
Those are a couple off the top of my head from recently that give a justifiable fear to some.

Unfortunately this is reality for some people. Tell me what person of color would not feel nervous beyond belief if a cop pulled them over right now??
EDIT: this was supposed to be response to the Lebron comment

I have some thoughts after reading through some of the things posted here.
-Protests have been highly effective, historically speaking.
-Athletes make exactly what the free market says they should make.
-Being successful does not diminish one's argument.
-Criticizing individuals who advocate for change on an issue for not advocating on every issue simultaneously is ridiculous.
-Getting the police to not use excessive force should not require civilians following them around on the job.
-Anyone saying that protests are going to stop them from being fans is lying. Every sport, including NASCAR, if that even qualifies as a sport, is doing this. Enjoy the bowling on ESPN 8, I guess.
-Why is it so hard for people to admit that their world view is not perfect and may, in the light of overwhelming evidence, need some amending?
-The amount division in this country is very disheartening. The president has made it worse, but he is a symptom of the lack of properly funding public education that teaches civic values and critical thinking, as well as people living in separate realities because of media echo chambers. Here is my challenge to everyone. Consider the concerns of the other side and try to understand them. Expose yourself to different media. Fact check. Do not judge until you know more about the issue. Accept that you may be wrong about some things and that it is okay to adjust your opinions.

I feel I should share this.
While weโre considering the concerns on all sides, have we considered how police officers feel? Iโm going to share two videos...
The first oneโs going to show how quickly resisting arrest can escalate, and Iโm sure it has been used in different training scenarios for police officers. https://youtu.be/_BZkxLQ6zlk
The second one shows the other camera angle of the Jacob Blake shooting where, after resisting arrest, begins walking back to reach or enter in his vehicle. https://youtu.be/9u9jndrppGM
What is he going to the car for? Is there a weapon? Is he complying with police to have his day in court? Is there about to be a hostage situation if they do nothing? Are the kids in the car in danger knowing a potential felon just successfully resisted arrest?
https://archive.is/YcYRU
He wasnโt just walking back to his car and, oh! Out of nowhere a mean ole cop popped a few caps in him. Thereโs context to the situation. -

He wasnโt just walking back to his car and, oh! Out of nowhere a mean ole cop popped a few caps in him. Thereโs context to the situation. This is the kind of tribal mentality that is hurting the country.
A police shooting happens and, without knowing the facts about the incident, people take sides. I see so much bias on both sides.
Just wait to judge. Both parties involved deserve that. Itโs not that difficult to reserve judgment.
Iโm withholding judgment, but there are some things we do know. There was no gun in the car. There was a knife in a location not disclosed by the police. Three young children were in the car. A man was shot seven times in the back in front of his children.
What is indisputable is that, generally, force is used on a disproportionately high number of minorities and that needs to change. No need to reserve judgment on that.

The problem is that we have seen cops use more restraint against white men with weapons who have already murdered people than they do with black people during simple traffic stops

Thats the point right there. the extreme way its handled. Criminals need to be punished and if your a criminal and you put your family at risk that is on you. They wouldn't be involved if you didn't break the law. Yet the white boy who shot down people in a church gets burger king afterwards that the cops bought him. Like you cant be serious

I get your sentiment but protesting themselves isn't going to do anything. It's not a real protest. As soon as they were told they would lose money they came right back. If the athletes wanted real change then they would do ride along with officers and make suggestions on police reform. All sides of the arguments are in favor of police reform. They used to do this until the ride along's starting changing the minds of the people doing the protests. Anyways i get where you are coming from but don't agree with your overall premise.
I hear you man. Definitely seems like an insurmountable task and if money is at the forefront than thats on players. How BIG of a statement would it be for say Patrick Mahomes to cut his check up and say no thanks guys im good. I cant play ball while their unrest in my community. And for people to think he wont make millions without football is just silly. He will be fine
You picked the one who could make millions of sj causes. What about the lineman? What about the practice squad guy? what about the security guards at the games? what about the tv people? what about the camera operators? How do the subsidize their livings? Either way, you are missing my point. These athletes aren't wanting change. IF they did then they would do something that would facilitate change. People have tried to get them to have input on the issues that they claim to be about and they don't do it. That is why i mentioned ride alongs with police. They would rather have a viral moment instead. And again protesting themselves would never do anything because again they are only hurting all of those other people...

TV people can go in to other media outlets, body guards can body guard something else. Lineman can get jobs as trainers or a long list i dont feel like writing, practice squad guys will have to adapt to the world and pursue another career. If your going to continue to take "the mans" money then you dont have the right to complain. Again who in their right mind thinks Patrick Mahomes is worth 500 million dollars with all this stuff thats going on in the world.(Just using Patrick as an example, feel free to plug in any athlete and their absurd contract)

Professional athletes make exactly what the market says they should. There is a lot of money in sports.
And, to my knowledge, the first amendment does not have a clause stating that it does not apply to professional athletes or people that take โthe manโs money.โ
