Red Sox 32-28. They can beat the Jays and Orioles easily but the Yankees and Rays will give them trouble. As much as I want them to make the playoffs they won’t this year, I just hope they re-sign Mookie
With Sale gone, no Betts, no Price, no fix to the pen, I don't think the Sox will beat the Jays at all.
Jays are much better suited, especially with Pearson on no innings count in a 60 game schedule, plus Ryu..And hate to break it to you, but there is a 0% chance Betts goes back to Boston. He always wanted out, which is why he never entertained re-signing, and Boston already has serious payroll trouble with luxury tax problems and one of the highest "dead money" situations in baseball. If anything, they're going to shed as much as possible
Pearson is questionable with the control and being a rookie, Ryu should be good however. I could see the Sox and Jays even
Questionable with the control?? Please tell me where you have ever read something bad about his control! Please.. I'd love to see it.
Every scouting report says he fills the zone with almost all his offerings, especially his 99-104 mph fastball and slider. His minor league stats show he absolutely throws strikes (2.4 BB/9). There is absolutely nothing indicating this is a thing.
Sure, we have yet to see the Jays blossom, so it's early to say they will overtake the Sox for the foreseeable future, but judging by young talent, and future payroll, you'd be extremely hard-pressed to find anyone outside of Boston say the Sox have a better looking future than the Jays.. Sox are a mess.. Jays have the best young nucleus in the sport along with Padres, Rays and Braves.
Jays will be better in the future but this year I think it is even. Sox have a better offense and Jays have better pitching
This may be true, but the Jays offense have a chance to absolutely explode at any time.
When you have Vlad, Bo, Biggio, Gurriel, Jansen as 5/9 of your order, plus Martin and Groshans coming up, you could have growing pains, or you could be the best offense in baseball. That's a huge ceilingI don’t believe in Biggio yet. Vlad may break out and Bo will be a stud. But we have JD, Devers, the x-man, Vazquez (who did amazing last year), and Benny who might have a bounce back season. Your guys have potential but ours have shown their potential
Don't look past Biggio, he hit for the cycle in his rookie season plus 16 home runs . Not many players can do that in a lifetime let alone a rookie season.
Maybe but I haven’t seen enough and he wasn’t playing amazing in the minors. The average scares me
What Biggio showed in his rookie season, and why everyone in the industry became high on him isn't his power (which he showed already in the minors), his versatility to play all over the field well, or his good defense at 2B..
It was his insane plate discipline and pitch recognition. He almost never swung at a pitch out of the zone, and actually led MLB in it.
A rookie who walks 73 times in only 400 AB, and never swings outside of the zone?? That is a very good thing. There isn't many better things to see from a young hitter.Like I said if he can hit for a high average I will believe in him but it was only 1 year of a prospect I wasn’t so high on and had a low average. He did show me that he has discipline but I believe in Vlad and Bo more than Cavan
Average means nothing when your OBP is near .400.. it's 2020 dude... Not 1986.. nobody cares about AVG anymore.
And yes, so do I.. Cavan wasn't supposed to be a core piece. He's just turning into one.
Vlad and Bo are supposed to be the superstars of course. For me, I care more about plate discipline than average when it comes to young players, and while Cavan strikes out a good bit, the walk rate is really encouraging, I'm a huge fan of his and think he is really underrated just because Bo and Vlad are on the same team. I own Cavan in just about every dynasty baseball league I'm in and look forward to a future of 20/20 seasons with .380+ OBP
I agree! Last year was very encouraging. I knew he was disciplined in the minors during his breakout, but nobody thought he would be truly elite at it. Which he's become. If he's even 80% his father, which he very well could be, the Jays have a stud.
The best part is, Cavan wasn't supposed to be a core piece. Vlad, Bo, Groshans and Now Martin are the true core. Getting Cavan in there is just gravy. And a high on base to go with the potential of those offensive pieces is scaryIf he does good this year again, I will believe in him. But from the scouting reports Bo and Vlad will be amazing. Bo was amazing last year and I think he will continue to be the Jays superstar for years to come, Cavan could but Bo and Vlad have a better chance
Oh for sure. Bo, in my opinion is the centerpiece. I think he can be an mvp candidate for years to come. Total package. He just flat out hits.. and hits it extremely hard! You wouldn't think he has the power he does, but his swing has insane exit velos.
Vlad will be limited to only his hitting being valuable. Though I think he has the potential to hit like Miggy in his prime. Or become a monster power hitter even. But more of a 1B/DH... He will only be at 3B until Groshans makes him move over.

Bo is the best by far. He is almost a 5 tool player (missing arm strength)! I do great with him in BR lol. Biggio could be like Bo with less speed. Vlad needs to improve on defense but I’m confident in his hitting

Haha see that's not true IRL. I have no clue where they get his arm rating from.. I watched Bo in every game and followed him since he was hitting .400 in the minors.. he has a great arm.
And ya, I'm not convinced at all about Vlad's defense. He's just too big bodied to handle 3B, despite the fact he moves very well for such a big dude. He had a rough go last year, but I'm confident in his hitting to carry him to his expectations. The combination of his father's bat to ball skills and his amazing eye will eventually show everyone why he was the first scouted 80 grade hit tool in history.

He might have an average arm but definitely not above average. Most shortstops have a better arm but not as good range. Vlad needs to move to 1st now! Just because he is young doesn’t mean that is the right position! Moving Vlad to first would take all the hate on his defense off of him!

And they could, because they have a perfect stopgap for him in Travis Shaw, who is actually an above average defender at 3B. They have him for arbitration for next year too, which times well with the arrival of Groshans.
I think he will only get one more try at 3B.

Miggy huh? That's high praise. Probably the 3 best right hand hitters I have seen (watched baseball since mid 70's) are Miggy, Pujols and Trout.

AL
Texas Rangers 33-27 pitching staff is actually really solid and deep
NL
Miami Marlins 20-40 I think the Fish got better but the schedule is brutal obviously having to play the Mets, Phillies, braves, nats and now yanks, rays, Boston. Only play 2 bad teams in balty and Toronto
Reasons for Texas surprising
Underrated staff 1-5 in Kluber, Lynn, Minor, Gibson, Lyles
And 6 lefty heavy lineup they can use every game vs righties

Oh, I don't think Schmidt is in the Pujols, Miggy, Trout mix. Manny is a cheater and I despise cheaters. Even though it pains me as Brett is my all time favorite, Schmidt is the best 3rd baseman of all time. Little more power and defense over Brett. Brett was a better hitter as far as average and fewer k's.
-
Pujols - 144 career wRC+, 87.7 fWAR
Trout - 172 career wRC+, 73.4 fWAR (obviously on a legendary trajectory)
Manny - 153 career wRC+, 66.3 fWAR
Cabrera - 146 career wRC+, 70.6 fWAR
Schmidt - 147 career wRC+, 106.5 fWAR
Schmidt is absolutely in that conversation as best right-handed hitter since the mid 70's.. literally right in line. And because of his defense, as one of the best players period since that time.
Trout is on an otherworldly trajectory.
Pujols slowed down to a crawl, but so did Miggy and Schmidt. They all do..And ya, Brett is definitely top 5 greatest 3B... After Schmidt, you can put him, Chipper, Mathews, Boggs, and even Beltre in any position 2-6.. it's close.
Anyways, my point was Schmidt was in that mix, and stats prove it. He's right in line with hitting, and crushes them overall, because of his elite defense

Pujols - 144 career wRC+, 87.7 fWAR
Trout - 172 career wRC+, 73.4 fWAR (obviously on a legendary trajectory)
Manny - 153 career wRC+, 66.3 fWAR
Cabrera - 146 career wRC+, 70.6 fWAR
Schmidt - 147 career wRC+, 106.5 fWAR

Trout is still in his prime
Manny was a cheater allowing him to sustain it for longer
Pujols and Cabrera have taken a big hit on those numbers for several years. These two haven't put up good numbers for what, 3 years now for Cabrera and like 6 for Pujols? Subtract those years and I will bet they are pretty close to trout for wRC+.
Schmidt was the best 3rd baseman of all time which says a lot.Brett is a close 2nd though. -

Schmidt was the best 3rd baseman of all time which says a lot.Brett is a close 2nd though.Manny was a cheat. I agree. He was an incredible bat though, no denying that. From the moment he arrived.
And Pujols and Miggy took a big hit, correct. Pujols for 6+ years now..
Miggy for only 3...Should that help their case?? No.
Schmidt put up monster seasons just like they did, and finished with the same wRC+ for his career as them. If you subtract any of these guys bad years, they would be near trout. You can't cherry pick seasons to make a case here. And no, Brett is not a close 2nd. He's no where near Schmidt.
Schmidt had over 20 fWAR more than him. Light years more valuable defensively, and better offensively (147 to 132 wRC+).
For accolades too.
Schmidt was a 3 time MVP, 1 time WS champ.
Brett a 1 time mvp, 1 time WS champ.Brett is grouped together with Mathews, Boggs, Chipper and Beltre.. no where near Schmidt.

WAR is the most overrated stat ever. Largely dependent on your backup.
Schmidt was a career .267 hitter with a strikeout almost once every 5 plate appearances. Terrific player, all time great, HOF, best 3rd baseman but not the hitter Pujols and Cabrera was in their prime imo.

The most overrated stat you just used, after calling WAR that. AVG..
It's not 1985 anymore. We understand value more today, and WAR encompasses that.. the other stat I used wRC+ perfectly illustrates my point, and if you think that's overrated too, then you know nothing about baseball but what the back of an 80's Topps baseball card tells you.Schmidt was better in almost every way than Brett and it shows in every intelligent, encompassing metric. That's not a knock on Brett, who was an absolute legend. You're just comparing him to the greatest.
My favorite quote about how Schmidt played the game. "He could play the piano, and move it too".

Btw your explanation of WAR is dead wrong. It's dependant on your peers in the same time. What better way to compare. And considering Schmidt and Brett played literally at the same time, it's a perfect comparison

I believe I did say Schmidt was the best 3rd baseman of all time. I still don't think he was a better hitter than Pujols or Cabrera in their prime.

You said Brett was a close 2nd, which I believe I proved you completely wrong..
And in their prime, Pujols had a bigger peak offensively yes. It lasted a decade... But fell off completely where Schmidt did not.
Miggy no. Schmidt had just as good of a prime offensively.

Apparently Posey is the latest player to say no to playing this year.
