Advice for distinguishing different pitches..

Would like to everyone's approach on telling the difference in fastball compared to slider or change-up. I swear you can throw change-up down the middle to me all game and I'd be early everytime.

The changeup moves a little up when it comes out of the pitcher's hand, opposed to the fastball that comes in straight. Don't be discouraged though, we all get fooled every now and again because it can be really hard to tell especially if the pitcher has a great changeup and a deceptive delivery.

Okay, interesting. I just watch the ball come out of the hands and react. It becomes a muscle memory kind of thing after a while.

This is an interesting approach and one I haven't heard or thought of yet. I try and track the ball with my eyes and I can never really tell the difference between various pitches. Perhaps one reason I am a horrible hitter. I think I'll give this a try even though it'll probably make me an even worse hitter until I get used to it. I'll try anything though as I'm sick and tired of losing 1-0 and 2-1 ball games. Does this strategy work on a T.V. as well as a monitor? I know a monitor is the way to go but I'm still playing on a T.V. which is probably part of my problem when it comes to hitting as well. Thanks for the tip.

That can be tough as well, because usually they tunnel it in the same path as a fastball. The key is to sit back until the ball starts breaking, you can see the spin on the ball but you need to recognize it in a split second because if you think it's a slider and it's a fastball, you're gonna be late every single time. And vice versa if you think it's a fastball and it's a slider, you'll flail every time. Most of it is just repetition and practice and seeing a certain pitcher often enough to pick up on the spin as early as possible.

I follow the pitch with my eyes too. I learned to watch pitches in this game the same way I learned in real baseball.

if you watch the pitchers arm and it's relative distance to his head. you will notice the slider is released slightly different.
this is a strategy that works in real life too. you are tracking the pitches trajectory, speed, and distance relative to it's release point. you will notice immediately how each pitch moves and your peripheral vision will track the pitch as well.
you need to keep your eyes in one spot on a straight level line. here you will notice when the ball moves above and below that level line.

I watch the ball too. But I get what he's saying. If I'm too focused on the ball, I just follow it and swing at everything. It's hard to explain, but if I zoom my focus out some, I still see the ball, but also am aware of the strike zone.

I think this works better in real life than in this game. The arm slots are all very similar and when you're facing a guy who throws gas, which they all do pretty much, you have no time to look anywhere else but at the pitcher's hand and the ball as soon as it comes out. You also need to decide right away if you're swinging or not and where you'll place the PCI, because especially on HOF and Legend there is simply no time to "watch" the entire trajectory.
I do get what you're saying about the peripheral vision, you start doing that automatically after some time. Most newer players focus on the strike zone or their PCI too much, which is a mistake because then you don't have your eyes in the right location and you'll be late almost every single time.
