Why does everyone want Felix?
-
Last year the general sentiment was that he sucked compared to other guys, but since he was my favorite player growing up so I used him anyways. Now I'm seeing tons of posts from people excited to get him, and some even plan to ditch meta guys like Hal for him. None of these people appear to be Mariners fans but who knows.
Is this just because he'll have a 95 mph Sinker and 98-ish FB and sinkers are the meta cheese right now?
-
He has a Sinker! Thats all you need...
-
I'm just excited because we don't have a ton of pitchers, The only ones I can rely on are Kluber/Newhouser/Lodolo, I'd much rather have King Felix then Kyle Wright or Roy Oswalt.
Who would "ditch" Hal for him though? Hal is free and there are 5 pitcher slots.
-
Probably the sinkers and probably to add some variety in the rotation. I always found him easier to hit than others
-
Most people never got to use him last year. He was a BR reward.
-
hahaha I was right! Though it's really true how little SP depth there is right now, and I really hate it. For some reason I don't really enjoy using Kluber so I've been trying to find quality starters I can lean on and it's difficult. Finally broke down and got Brusdar and he seems like he will be fun to use, his sinker is basically a 100 mph splitter.
-
I dont want to take him, but I'd rather take him than Torre and Elsberry.

Oh yeah that's right, I had to wait forever and then still pay a ridiculous amount for him. It was a decent card but I personally can't stand how SDS tweaks everyone's pitch velocities so everyone has 12-20 fastball to changeup differentials. Peak Felix had a 93-95 mph fastball and a 89-92 mph bowling ball of a changeup. It'd have to be a splitter with how pitch speeds work.

His pitch speed differential isn’t that great. And I do remember him throwing 98-99 when he was younger. I get what you’re saying though. Glavine has a 95 FB and 76 change. I watched hundreds of Glavine starts and he rarely hit 93-94.

Hearing someone say Felix was their favorite player growing up has never made me feel older. Thanks a lot lol

Felix is a cool cat.

Yeah in 2005 and 2006 he was like 97-99, and his changeup did have more of a differential at around 86. So for his 86 Prospects card that's legit. But peak Felix was 2009-2010 and 2013, and by then his FB was 92-96 and his changeup often overlapping with his slower fastballs. And everything he threw had just ridiculous break.
But yeah the whole juicing cards' fastballs and giving them 20 mph slower changeups I don't like. I think part of it is just that SDS couldn't quite make the changeups competitive at their realistic differentials, but 15 mph is pretty [censored] rare. 20 mph is some freak of nature [censored] or slowing down your arm speed so much that it would telegraph it.

I hate using stubs on starting pitchers so I will take him.

You don't mess with the king man. I lived in Portland for a bit and I couldn't get Giants games broadcast up there so I could only watch the Mariners and I became a fan. Whenever he'd pitch the stadium would just feel more electric and into his presence like they were under his spell. I developed a respect for him because of it and really hope he is the last boss pick and it's a high rated version of him.
-
How is Hal a meta pitcher? He’s a free 98.
“Meta” pitcher would be... anyone with a sinker...
-
He's always been pretty terrible in the game, his pitches have always been the same speed and he's been really easy to hit in the past
-
Cuz he has a sinker so it can be spammed

He was basically the lone bright spot for them since he was a rookie in 2005. It actually makes me angry knowing the M's basically wasted his prime years when he was loyal and awesome for them. I hope he bounces back to at least a serviceable 4 or and gets to make the playoffs with the Braves.

I envy them. Mark McGwire was my favorite player as a kid, so I hit adulthood just in time to find out that my hero was a cheater. lol
