Catcher throwing meter not showing

I'm a user that goes for the trophies and two of them involve perfect throws.
When i try to set up the play for a catcher throw to cut down a base stealer, the meter never even shows. For the trophy, you need to get the meter in the middle.
One hurdle for me is i always used buttons to throw. I have been trying to get used to meter in Practice Mode. The meter shows for every fielder except the catcher in practice, or in a game, so if no meter comes up, no reward for a perfect throw.
Anyone know why the catcher meter never shows up?
