This is the right answer, but I do like showing bunt slightly early before the first pitch then pulling it back. Usually if you do this you'll get a ball thrown on purpose (via a bad release).

In terms of game theory and real life OP is absolutely correct.

The problem is in the show leading off is broken where you never get picked off when an extra step off the bag, and there's no downside to a pitcher throwing over or stepping off (in real life there are practical limits), so you get in this weird stalemate. It's a broken game design where there's no risk, and the reward is won only by being a patient annoyance.

So we all kinda agree that the best way to resolve this is not lead off the extra step (because the extra step is a huge deal when stealing, so it behooves the pitcher to pick off every time) so that we can all get on with playing the game.

Mize is amazing. I think he's clearly the best pitcher not named Newhouser or Kluber in the game right now. All 5 of his pitches are nasty and have good control, and play well off of each other.
