That's correct. You can give any player on any team an injury in manual mode. There's a huge list to choose from.

Go into gameplay settings. In advance settings on one of the menus it has an option for injuries. You can turn them On, Off, or Manual.

I just had this happen to me. First time this has ever happened to me.
