Explain disappearing legends to me

I know why they have far less past players than 2K, for instance, (individual contracts rather than a collective), but can someone explain to a noob (second year player) how/why past players appear then disappear from The Show?

Is it purely money?
Short term deals?
Something else?

It can be any number of reasons. Legends/families cant come to an agreement with Sony on compensation, could be short term deals and depending on community usage they choose not to renew the deal, legal issues can keep players out.

All that you said,and add in possible lack of usage and new high profile guys getting added that would steal the thunder.and probably others that we don't know about
