I saw someone last month I believe complaining about a runner who has a good steal rating and/or baserunning aggressiveness rating not getting a good jump on a steal attempt. Someone responded and said to press L1 as soon as the pitcher lifts his leg. But in my experience, whether you press L1 to steal or R1 to retreat if there’s a pickoff attempt has no impact whatsoever on what the runner does. Recently, as the CPU threw over to first base for a pickoff attempt, I pressed L1, yet my runner still retreated. Has anyone else noticed this?

L1 R1 dancing makes it easy to steal a base if you hit R2 for a runner to auto steal. If you get your runner to move towards the next base as the pitcher lifts his leg they’ll get a great jump. I’ve been doing it for years in MLB and it works consistently. But if your runner has bad base stealing and mid speed you’re rolling dice.

@knc104pcknc_PSN A player with a higher Steal Stat has a better chance to return to the base on a pickoff even if you've preloaded the steal. Personally, I load the steal and Hold L1 then release on the leg kick. It's faster IMO but does set you up for a higher probability to get picked off in the event the pitcher does through over. Sometimes if it's an obvious pickoff I can hit the R1 in time to cancel the steal attempt, but more often than not I'm dead to rights. I usually try and wait for the pitcher to come set to hold L1. Tin Hat talk...it seems like if I immediately hold L1, the CPU coding picks up on it and will throw over right away. Even if it's not a normal situation to try and throw over.

I know what you’re saying, but how do we know this is really how the game works? After all, on the controls screen, there’s nothing about pressing anything other than L2 before the pitch. There have also been times when I thought that I pressed L1 right after the pitcher started his motion, only for a runner who has a high steal rating to still not get a good jump. Also, occasionally I’ve pressed R1 as soon as I needed to on a pickoff attempt, only for the runner to not react right after my input. I tend to think it doesn’t matter. And after all, every player has a steal and baserunning aggression rating, which are both supposed to impact the quality of the jump most of the time. If hitting L1 had an impact, that would basically be a way to get around that, which I just don’t know is really the case.

I’m taking the no response to mean that we really don’t know that it has an impact. Also, have the developers ever said anything about whether it does?
