Controller defaults to player 2 for home games

I cannot find any instructions within XBox to change this. I purchased and connected a second controller to my XBox X/S console and since then the console is defaulting my control for all home games to the player two controller, even though the games are all versus the CPU.

I've repeatedly tried to disconnect the second controller but the game always comes up during home games and requires me to reconnect the second controller. This is even when I go the extra step to delete the second controller from the console.

Anyone know of a way in Franchise games to always have the controller for player one be the one the human uses?
