Online multiplayer help: never had PS plus in the past

Looking to purchase next gen. Do you have to have PS Plus/Xbox Live or Game Pass for multiplayer?

I have been able to play previous versions on PS4 without PS Plus.

So I'm trying to figure out if XBOX or PS5 is more economic for me? I'm only going to play The Show and the new college football game when it goes down.

I can only speak for xbox (the title does not match your post):
You need Gamepass Core or Gamepass Ultimate in order to play the multiplayer.
I guess it is the same for PS5

If you want to play online; you will need to purchase a PS+ or GamePass subscription for whichever console you buy.
