Delayed Input?

Hey gentlemen (and ladies),
Is there anything my opponent can do which would mess with my controller input during an online game?I just played an opponent (he was in the 400’s, I was low 500’s) and all of my input was super wonky on both sides of the ball.
My opponent was doing the classic bunt dance/steal cheese routine, but more importantly, I could not execute a pitch for the life of me. It wasn’t just missing my spot, it was so bad I’d select a pitch then try to trace the pattern but could not.
I gave up 6 runs in two innings, but didn’t quit because I figured I’d get some innings in. Eventually I was sort of able to pitch and kept my opponent off the board for the rest of the game.
Any idea what could make the connection so bad for me but seemingly fine for my opponent?

Interesting. Would this make it difficult/impossible to enter pause menus etc? -

If really bad... sure. I have played at odd times, like middle of night, in past years, and have gotten matched up with folks in UK or Korea. Many of those games were basically unplayable. -
Pretty sure this guy was in Seattle which is only a few hours away. Did he just have really bad internet? Also, how come the connection quality was so debilitating for me but not him?

I've been told that if your opponent's internet speed is slower than your speed; your speed will slow down to match there speed. Not sure if that's true though.

Ugh. Unplayable is right.
I wonder why it was worse for the first few innings. -

Lag compensation can do that.

So lag compensation is my connection slowing down to match his connection speed?
