I found this a little interesting - Last Year's MVP Finalists and this year's cards...
-
So I was looking today out of curiosity and this is what I found
AL MVP Finalists
- Judge - Has a 99 card
- Ohtani - Has two 99 cards
- Alvarez - Has a 99 Card
- Ramirez - Has a 99 card
- Altuve - Has a 99 card
These cards are Season 3 eligible (well one of Ohtani's 99s is)
NL MVP Finalists
- Goldschmidt - Has a 95 card
- Machado - Has a 99 card
- Arenado - has a 97 card
- Freeman - has a 98 card
- Betts - Has a 97 card (and should get a HRD card - probably a 95)
Only Arenado and Freeman's best cards are Season 3 Eligible.
I doubt it was intentional on SDS' part but it seems like the best players in the NL last year have kind of gotten the short end of the stick so far. I am sure they will all eventually get their due and have their 99 cards but it seems a little off balance so far.

Season 3 just started a few days ago.

That wasn't the point. The point about AL cards being season 3 viable was an addendum. I should have left the season 3 eligibility comment off my post.
The point was simply that I found it interesting that all of the Top 5 AL MVP candidates have had 99's in the game already and only 1 of the NL's top 5 has had a 99 so far.
It wasn't even a complaint, just an observation

It’s definitely intersecting. My first thought was- none of the NL guys are having as a good a season as they did last year but then I read your list and neither are the AL guys (except Ohtani obviously).
And actually Freeman and Arenado are having a great season. I don’t know, it’s weird all around haha

…and an interesting one I’ll have to agree

The lowest WAR by Baseball References is the one who has the 99. Tied for lowest at least.
4.1 Betts
3.6 Freeman
2.6 Goldschmidt
1.5 Arenado
1.5 Machado -
Of the AL players you mentioned, 3 of them have 99s for things they did THIS year (Judge POTM, Ohtani POTM/WBC, Ramirez ASG).
If your NL players were having better 2023s, they'd be getting more 99s.

I showed the 5 NL players Baseball Reference WAR in another comment. This is the 5 AL players WAR.
6.5 Ohtani
3.3 Ramirez
2.3 Judge
2.0 Alvarez
0.6 AltuveSeems like Altuve isn’t better than anyone.

Goldschmidt - WBC
Machado - WBC
Arenado - 2023 All Star
Freeman - POTM
Betts - WBC/HRDHow are those also not based on "this year"?

Um ... those aren't 99s. If they had performed better this year, they would have been. That's the whole point.
