The Nolan Ryan Quirk
-
Why doesn’t Nolan Ryan have the outlier quirk? When they first announced outlier, I was like “oh cool, that’s the Nolan Ryan quirk.” But Ryan doesn’t even have it. Like, what?!?! Nolan Ryan is THE all-time great baseball flamethrower. He’s known for having the best fastball of all time, and guys like Jimmy Cordero (who’s that?) have the quirk, but not him. I’m just sort of laughing at the irony. Maybe we’ll get an outlier version of Ryan later on.
-
He should have it, everyone knows that guy could throw fireballs back in the day.
-
He’s most likely to get a 99 later on in the year and most likely will have that quirk.
-
Excuse you, that’s the Jimmy Cordero quirk. This Nolan Ryan guy sounds like a chump.

Most definitely

That’s because Ryan didn’t throw 100 mph, but he could pitch 95-96 for 180 pitches per game, 260 innings a year. Kids today that throw that hard rarely last, except the odd Verlander rarity, because of mechanics.
Guys that could touch 100mph before early 2000’s were a freak show, and rarely lasted or were any good. It’s like the 100m dash, or how kids are taller than their grandparents I guess, call it evolution or GMOs in food

Sorry but that's not true. They changed how pitch speeds were measured after Ryan retired, from 10 feet from the plate in his days to 50 feet from the plate.
If Ryan was measured using the standard they use today, it is estimated his fastball would be at minimum 106 mph and up to 110 mph. His average fastball speed would be 108.1 mph.
Every one of his cards should have the quirk.

If this is true then that is absolutely insane that he can throw that fast especially as a starter

Specifically this part:
OK, How Fast Was It? - The FFE
Calculation
Today's pitch speeds are measured from 50 feet away from the plate, but Ryan's was measured at approx. 10 feet. Pitch speeds drop 8-11 mph (average 9 mph) from 50 ft away to the front of the plate. So we must add 6-8 mph to the speed measured by Rockwell in order to be equivalent to today's readings.
Therefore, Nolan Ryan's pitching speed as measured today would be at minimum 106 mph and could have been as high as 110 mph.
How did we arrive at 108.1 mph? The facts are 100.9 at 10 feet, plus 9 mph drop per 50 feet. So add 7.2 mph (9/50*40) to 100.9 to get 108.1 mph.
The speed of the ball as it crossed the plate would have been 99.1 mph - calculated as 100.9 at 10 feet less (9/50X10) or 1.8 mph
-
They say Feller would have been up there too. Like 107... Hard to believe either him or Nolan can hit that when a guy built like Chapman tops out at 105... But they are all freaks...

Who knows if he will even get the quirk. Up until this year “active” quirks aka the only ones that actually did anything were on live series cards. And right now the Active hitting quirks are only on LS cards and Outlier is only on live series and prospects to my knowledge

This. Only live series cards recieve "active" quirks. Batting wise and pitching wise.

Britton has Outlier, so flashback cards can have it.

So does kopech and pearson...

I had the privilege of watching Ryan as a 10 yr old in 92’ at Memorial Stadium. 1 yr away from retirement and the man still averaged 1k / per inning. Even at 10, I took it all in as much as I would now. Was watching the best of the best of a man & his craft

Too bad we’ll never get this card in-game.

Good to know, thanks for clarification. So then outlier may not be considered "active" then. Max Scherzer live series in 19 had the Stopper quirk, which is an active one, but didn't have it on his Finest flashback.

If you can find it, watch the movie "Fastball" and you will see that measuring the speed of a fastball was changed after Ryan retired. Averaged 108 MPH. I saw him pitch in 1977 4 rows behind home plate against the White Sox. I had just graduated college after playing 4 years of D1 BB. I knew right then why I wasn't drafted. He was untouchable. He threw absolute gas and he had a devastating curveball. Grunted during every pitch.
