The servers were crawling during the updates, they are good now.

To answer your question, both Microsoft and Nintendo have servers that interface with the PS servers, so there is that cost (run-time and maintenance). There is a cut of the game $$ they get. And there are marketing costs. I doubt the monthly online service fees they charge cover any of those costs, so you can't take those into account. There are also other costs that we aren't aware of because we aren't in the industry.

Just the electricity to run the servers and air conditioning to keep them cool must cost a bundle! Even if they are on solar. Then take into account the personnel. That is a lot of money.

    1. More players equals greater server load. So hardware is required for storage and fail over.

    2. Testing, each platform needs its own development testing and patch testing.

    3. Marketing, PS is a known quantity. You are selling a new game across an additional two fan bases.

There is so much more to keeping this releases field ready than anyone who is not in that line of work thinks. SDS does a really great job IMO.

So are you essentially saying that 16 & 17 were way greater games than 18-22 because there were less players so the server load was less?

Jeff, this isn't about the quality of the games. This is about the cost it takes to make, maintain, and drop content for the game. But, this isn't about the money Sony forks out. This is about where the money goes that Microsoft and Nintendo get for the game.

So Cliff...you upvoted this More players equals greater server load. So hardware is required for storage and fail over

So you don't think server loads effects quality of gameplay? Why do you think there are warping fastballs when you play Ranked Seasons or Events online? I know you're an IT guy but certainly servers have something to do with internet connections and gameplay no?

So if this stuff is not connected somehow to gameplay then the game has deteriorated over the last 5 years instead of gotten better every year.

Internet connection, no. Gameplay, absolutely. The servers are accessed nonstop for data, and the more players there are, the more server load there is.

This doesn't have to do with the quality of the game itself, though. The code has changed drastically since 16 & 17 and can handle the extra players better. Does that mean there haven't been server load problems since Microsoft came online? Of course there has. We've seen it. But that isn't what this thread is about. This thread is about where the money goes that Microsoft and Nintendo get for the game. Both companies are new to the game and have to deal with their own server issues. Both companies have had to invest in dedicated servers to talk with the Sony servers. Both companies have had to invest in personnel to maintain and service those dedicated servers. That's what this is about.

Surely Microsoft and Nintendo are paying royalties to Sony to patch into there game. Where is that money going as the OP is asking? It doesn't appear that they are upgrading "their" servers with any of that moola.

Those are behind-the-door deals we will never know the specifics on. With the extra costs that Microsoft and Nintendo are incurring, there has to be some consideration by Sony. All we can do is use logic and supposition. It would be very interesting indeed to see the balance sheets for the income and expenses of the game for each company. To come flat out and say that Sony isn't investing in their hardware is pretty naive.

Not sure if that last statement is a slap in my face or a general statement. We can agree to disagree then.
