What’s up with check swings??
-
Check swings are way better this year. I rather most of them be swings, than none of them like 20.
-
Last year was a check swing fest. Half the game was check swings. This year I will say discipline plays a much bigger and better role on if your check swing is successful.
-
I get that you don’t wanna make it easy to check swing all the time. Maybe make the plate discipline attribute and quirk matter a little more and make it where you can check swing better with some guys. IMO I feel like everyone is the same and basically 98% of the time it’s called a strike even when you barely brush the swing button.

Lol ok. Thanks for the discussion and sharing your very thoughtful opinion there lol
if you played last year then you know why the changed check swings
The problem is they didn’t fix foul balls too. The check swing nerf while leaving people able to foul off multiple balls in the dirt with bad timing as created a perverse gameplay situation where people that can’t read a pitch at all are rewarded over people reading a pitch a tick late.
I hope next year all swings with very early/very late timing on pitches out of the strike zone are misses too

I just played a game and I had three successful check swings they are fine in my opinion
-
I wonder if it could be a connection thing for me then.

Actually if you go through your players. Write down those with the best Plate discipline and those who have your worst. Then put a check next to them every time they are successful and an X when they are not. You will see there is actually a huge difference. Plate discipline plays a huge role this year.

I mean that could be the case. I do feel like the guys I use have good stats and I’ll get a lot of called strikes where I literally barely touch swing and the guy barely even lifts the bat from his shoulder. On my screen it doesn’t even show him doing the half swing animation and pulling it back. He barely twitches and it’s called a strike.
-
Are you looking at the actual Plate Discipline stat though, its kinda off the side so easy to overlook. For example Trea Turner AS only has 69 disc. He will fail his check swing a lot. However, Chipper Jones has 125 disc. He will have more successful checks.
-
Last year it was broken one way, and this year they broke it the completely opposite way. It seems like there should be a middle ground where check swings are appropriately successful. but obviously they have no idea how to do it

This year the check swinging is straight up broke. I get so many strike calls on check swings where the bat barely comes off the batters shoulder. I don’t ever remember it being like this. They are almost always called a strike even if you barely touch the swing button. The “feedback” isn’t correct at all either. Sometimes the feedback will even agree with me that I technically didn’t swing, but the ump still calls it a strike. I don’t get it. It’s probably a connection issue or something that’s causing this, but this definitely needs to be fixed.
Is this offline or online?
I play offline and they blow check swing calls when I bat. I’m not sure if it’s the batter’s swing that makes it look like he did or didn’t go in the overhead view, the batter’s plate discipline regardless of the swing style, or what. I have the umpire set to perfect on balls and strikes and for base running plays.
I also check swing on cookies in the zone by accident. Not sure if it’s my grip on the controller or something else, but it’s annoying as all heck.

It definitely needs to be fixed. Some dudes online can still check swing like it’s last year. Make it even across the board. Whatever controller or settings they have allow tons of checks swings. With a normal controller it’s a strike most of the time regardless of actual input.

They "fixed" a problem that people incessantly complained about and totally went the complete opposite direction, so now you basically can't check swing in this game without it being called a strike. That being said, it does seem to have changed back the other direction a little bit. Also the animations don't ever seem to match up with what's being called or what you see in the swing timing box. Don't even get me started on the barely tapping the swing button and the batter flailing at the pitch.
There's no actual rule in baseball declaring what a swing is, much less what a check swing is. It's a judgment call and theoretically should probably go 50/50, unless it's a blatant swing. There's also no real data kept on how often a check swing is called an actual swing.
All that said, check swings are no where near 50/50 on this game.

Uh...okay. If you check swing 100 more times unsuccessfully are you going to come back on and say they aren't fine in your opinion?
-
Discipline attributes don’t impact check swings anymore, it’s purely user based.

No cause that doesn't happen to me I can check my swing at least once a game

It’s at least three times a game for me. I feel like they give the batting CPU more ball calls for checked swings (when the box in the corner shows he clearly broke the plane) than strikes.
Meanwhile if I check and clearly didn’t swing on two strikes...
THREE!

I moved from MLB The Show 19 to 21 and the check swings are way different to me. I find most of my check swings are strikes now, compared to in 19 where I could successfully hold off on the swing.
-
The problem is offline the computer is still under the old system and the player is not. As someone that rarely plays online I can see why they made the change for online play. But the computer still gets check swings balls 50-60% off the time.
-
I said it at the beginning of the year and I still maintain the same stance now. They over compensated.
This is one of those deals where it was complained about in online play so they changed it and screwed offline players. Just earlier I was trying to do some Moments and got frustrated at the lack of ability to check swing.
