Was just voted the best defensive shortstop in the AL by AL managers, scouts, and executives and won a gold glove there last year, but SDS somehow has him at an 80 defense. C’mon SDS. Be better.

While the first point is great, you lost me on the fielding %, not the best way to evaluate defense

I agree. There are much better ways. But that was the easiest one to throw in.

I agree. There are much better ways. But Kiner-Falefa being a 93 defense despite his pedestrian defensive numbers just jumped out at me as outrageous enough to mention and that was the easiest one to throw in.

Fangraphs actually has Kiner as an elite fielder, higher then Crawford

Yeah you’re right. I just looked up his dWAR and it’s #2 right now. Which I don’t understand because I’ve watched him play and nothing he does is impressive. Plus he has 13 errors this year. But he probably isn’t the best example to use. Still can’t understand why Crawford is only an 80 though.

I think that is the thing though, good fielders don't need to make flashy plays as much because they have better range, so only using the eye-test doesn't tell the whole story. It's why there is such a wide-range of opinions on Jeter, the people who watch him and remember the flashy plays thinks he was great, and only stats people think he was bad.

That’s true. Jeter may be a bad example of your argument though. Anybody that really knew what they were watching with Jeter knew his flashy plays should’ve been routine plays but only because his range was so limited did they appear to be flashy. I think it’s more than just stats people that think he was a below average fielder. His gold gloves are pretty commonly referred to as some of the worst gold gloves ever given out. I could be wrong but I think it’s really only yankee fans that think he was a great fielder.

Well, I wasn't really referring to the involved fan that knew what he was watching, I just meant a casual fan who sees highlights and thinks, wow he is great!
