What an idiot. Didn't he have 2 more years at $23M or some ridiculous salary? I would have just ridden out the contract and banked the money. I guess I have no shame though.

Maybe they came to an additional agreement off the books. Like offering him a job as the hitting coach.

That’s what I thought he was going to do to give the O’s the middle finger.

I kind of feel bad for Davis. It would’ve been cool to see him make some kind of comeback (aside from breaking his hitless streak a couple years back). It’s too bad the shift killed his offense.

The shift did not help him. He was pretty much a pure power guy that had a few really good years. It also didn’t help that he came up to the plate with holes in his bat. Guy made strike outs cool before they became the MLB norm

I'd take $5M/Y over the next 20 years vs. $23M over the next 2. Without thinking twice!

Ah man! We need a new owner.

Ahhh I obviously didn't read the details on the annuity.
But it depends on what you can expect for a rate of return during the 20 years and the rate of inflation. There are scenarios where the present value of the lump sum and annuity are the same or one is better than the other. Generally though, yeah the $5M annuity is the better option.

He was the shifted more than any other play in the MLB from 2015-present day. Cool breakdown on his woes.

Tigers fan watching a rebuild of our own happen but I’m curious...
Just how bad is Chris Davis a financial black hole for the Orioles? Because we (the Tigers) were really bogged down by the disastrous Prince Fielder contract. We just paid it off this year or the year before, I think. It was enough that we didn’t really buy any players and just farmed prospects for the past few years, so I can’t imagine what kind of hole Davis’s 7-year contract punched in the Orioles’ wallet.

It was probably enough to guarantee there was no chance of resigning Machado.

Or the rising star that is Jonathan Schoop. Thanks for letting us take him by the way.

He was struggling towards the end in Baltimore and was struggling again in Milwaukee. He just needed the right place to be a good player and Detroit was able to do it. Baltimore is known to ruin talent (see Arrieta and Gausman).

You know it is funny how one player (Casty) can shine when he leaves and one player (Schoop) can shine when he arrives. Casty always said Comerica robbed him of homeruns and Schoop is having a HR resurgence.

I miss Castellanos. He was so much fun to watch when he was with us. Loved how he had his shirt slightly unbuttoned, with a big gold chain that danced around on his chest when he circled the bases. Was just an awesome player to watch.
And loved his epic flex at the pitcher at the beginning of the season. You see the Jomboy video on it?

As an Orioles fan the deal they gave Davis was really dumb for someone reasons. First, he had no huge offer even close to the Orioles offer on the table. Second, they knew he was using Adderall without a prescription. Third, why would the team sign Davis and then allow players like Britton, Adam Jones, Machado and Cruz walk?
The Orioles honestly just do some really dumb things, or did under Angelos. They didn't want to spend money on international prospects, they didn't like spending on free agents, they didn't believe that you pay a lot for starting pitchers, they would carry multiple Rule 5 guys on the roster, they would held on to Machado until the last year of his deal when if they would have traded him the year before they could have likely net two top 5 prospects from most any farm system that wanted Machado. Very odd that Davis got the monster deal that I thought would have ended up in Adam Jones, Manny Machado or Matt Wieters bank account.

In retrospect those decisions are EXTREMELY questionable. I suppose it made sense that Britton would get snatched by the buy-to-win-but-haven’t-since-2009 Yankees, but letting everyone else go without getting much in return while signing a monster contract with Davis... yikes. It’s like selling your good shares and then investing all that money in one thing on the stock market only for it to immediately go under.
