Is a monitor truly worth it?
-
100% worth it but as others said, it won’t magically make you better
But, it will help with turning in fastballs and I could definitely tell the difference going from a game mode TV to a monitor
If you play video games a lot, it’s a worthwhile investment

About halfway through 19 I went from an old 37" 720P TV to a 65" 4K with game mode. That was a huge difference. A monitor would probably be even better, but I don't think the difference would be as significant. If I only played MLB The Show I would consider it, but I wouldn't want to move the PS5 for just one game. Especially since I hit well enough for my standards with the current setup.
-
Depends on the TV you're having. If you have a low input lag TV (use game mode) the difference is negligible. I have a Samsung KS8000 and it has just a few more ms of input lag compared to my monitor. I hardly notice the difference and I've had success on both (1000 rating, 12-0 runs). I play on my monitor nowadays because I use my TV to actually watch TV while playing but I wouldn't mind playing on my TV if I had to.
People will tell you a monitor makes all the difference in the world and that's just not true. Does it make a difference if you have a high input lag TV? Yes it does. Is it absolutely neccessary to compete? No, not really.

It's worth it. For years (going back to like 2008-9) I played on a 22 inch flat screen with Game Mode on. Was a great TV that had great response time. I've always been good at FPS's & I believe for many years this TV was giving me an edge in that regard. I also eventually got a 60' TV, but even with game mode on, my 22' was significantly better in response time. So for years, I was stubborn, thinking my 22' was already so good, that I don't need a monitor
Then I got 1ms response time monitor like 5 months ago. It's a noticeable difference. It's just better, clearly. It's not HUGE, but the difference is there. If you play games where response time matters, just get one. There's no reason not to. You can get a good monitor for 150$ or less

To those that have switched, does it really make that huge of a difference or is it more a placebo effect?
If you have game hdmi I think it is a significant boost.
-
Another benefit for me to switching to a monitor last year is just being closer to the screen. Hard to decouple that from the benefits of higher response time but the 2 in tandem have made a huge difference for me.
-
Response time is KEY. I bought a 27 inch monitor with a 1 m/s response time and it has made a HUGE difference
-
Its definitely worth it from my experience. I usually play on a monitor but when I am on kid duty ill move my console to the living room to play on tv and notice a big difference. My monitor is high end but my living room TV is a little dated (7 years old). I am looking at getting a new TV and will look into a good one for gaming.
-
Hated the monitor at first because it took about 20-30 games to get used to but it eventually became a huge game changer. Switch to one of the strike zone hitting views (if youre not already) since everything becomes so much smaller and you will get it down/notice a major difference.

Go to rtings.com and see what your tv’s input lag is.
Monitors can usually get you to around 10ms of input lag or better. It varies greatly for televisions. -

I do see a difference going from TV to monitor BUT if i switch back and forth between the two.
If I stay on the Monitor or TV for an extended period of time .....it's all the same. You're late on some and early on some.
I mix it up here and there Monitor and TV.

Depends how old your TV is. Most newer TV models that support game mode rival or are close to monitors from a display lag perspective. If you have an old TV, you’ll find that the difference is night and day. My Tv was 8 years old when I bought my monitor. Made a huge difference
I dont think this is true, most newer tvs in game mode are still in the 10-15ms range while a good monitor youre looking at 1-2 ms response time. pretty big difference

Response time and input (display) lag are two different things. You won’t be able to find a monitor with a display lag below 5ms

The ks8000 still has about a 20ms response, for tvs this is great but a good monitor you can get under 5ms. Idk about you but thats a pretty big difference.

Absolutely false, you're mixing up response time with input lag. My monitor has a 1ms response time, but about 16-17 ms input lag. They're not the same thing.

input lag: 20ms
response time: 18msyou can find monitors with better results in both categories

Google your tv and look for input lag. If it’s more than 5 ms, maybe 8, then yes.

in most cases a good monitor is going to be better than a tv
