Equipment and how to activate it

How do you activate equipment to get the perks that say +6 +5 etc? I know you can do it for your player, but I thought in the past you could do it for the team too? Am I wrong?

Just for your player. You can equip a bat skin, but it has no effect on your teams attributes.
