Problems adding friend to play cross platform PS5 to PS4

I am having a terrible time trying to play a DD game vs my friend. He still has PS4 and I have PS5. We both have cross platform enabled through our profiles. When I go to the friends tab and search for his account I can find it and then I try to send him a request, but it comes up telling me we are already friends so I can’t send a request. I then go to my friends list and he is nowhere to be found. He was able to get a request to me at one point and I was able to accept it but then he still didn’t show up in my friends list. We have both tried restarting our consoles after I accepted his request and still didn’t change anything. Anyone have a fix to this issue? Or ideas of what else to try? Any help would be greatly appreciated
