My RS match was streamed...
-
...the other day and it wasn't a great experience. Mostly because I watched the stream recording after.
At the time, my RS rating was at an all-time high in the mid 600s. How had I managed to climb the ratings? Mostly gained through quick wins when I'd scrapped a run or two early and that sends some people running. I don't get a lot of wins the full 9-inning way. I do get a lot of losses that way though. I try not to quit early and have only done so a few times.
So I was rated too high for my comfort zone really, but I want to play online. Mostly because it's often fun, even when I'm losing, because it's a lot better than playing the CPU, but also because it's the only way to get cards prestiged. I have left a starter in a bit too long sometimes simply because it was going to rack up prestige innings and hopefully Ks.
I got matched up against someone whose team name was Twitch TV. I immediately realised there was a good chance this was going to be a streamed match. My partner was sitting with me and looked up the streamers name, and sure enough, there was my match on a slight delay. I thought about putting in a friendly quit request before the first pitch was thrown, but then I decided to go ahead and play anyway. I was suddenly nervous knowing the match was being live-streamed and it really showed. I threw to the wrong base a few times and generally didn't play my best. However, I managed to keep him off the score sheet for the first few innings. I only had one hit myself early on.
Just to comment about the hit I had... it's not unusual for me to have only one hit in the first few innings. I'm really struggling with hitting. I had given up using zone back in January (I bought the game in December) and was still using directional the other day when this match came up. Since this match, I spent all day yesterday using zone (with mixed results) and I'm going to try to improve my hitting.
My partner was watching the stream while I played, and because the stream was on a slight delay it was a bit hard to follow, but I did hear the streamer comment on how low my batting averages are. This didn't bother me too much as I'm more aware of the low batting averages than anyone, but I guess it started to sink in as the game went on that I was being picked apart for the benefit of someone's live streaming audience. I wouldn't realise until later that this wasn't for education but was certainly for entertainment. I suppose that would be sitting better for me if it hadn't been somewhat mean-spirited. More on that in a sec.
So I ended up losing. Scoreless first few innings but then he broke out. Ended up getting mercy-ruled in probably the sixth inning, sorry I can't remember.
Immediately after I watched the playback of the stream. The written comments to the side of the screen were fairly unpleasant. One of the viewers said my team was "garbage" and that they hoped I would lose 22-7. Jeezus I wish, 7 runs would be amazing. I re-heard the comment by the streamer about my batting averages. The streamer said he regretted giving up the one hit I'd had to that point as he felt I was a good candidate for a no-hitter. He made fun of / disparaged my choice of pinch hitter (Tony Gwynn)... honestly I was just desperate to get my second hit of the game and figured he could probably crank out a single (he did, followed by Tatis Jr getting a third hit and then that was my offensive output done). Streamer said how much he was looking forward to mercy-ruling me.
Positive comments he made were that he was pleased I was actually hitting slightly better than expected with Pudge and that he said it sucked for me that I hit into a double play after getting those two hits in a row. He also complimented a pitch or two.
So generally I felt a little off. His viewers were clearly delighting in the fact that he could beat me so easily. Interesting to see from the stream recording that he was initially matched up with a tougher foe and he made a friendly quit offer to that person (accepted) which then led to him being matched up with me. Obviously I was unaware until later, but the streamer said (after seeing my win-loss record) that he would not consider accepting a friendly quit request from me, even though he'd done one himself against a tough foe moments earlier. I had been thinking about it when I'd realised it was going to be a twich live stream match, but if I'd gone with my gut instinct and tried to FQ before first pitch, he was saying he would have denied it. Obvs this would have helped his WS push but honestly I think it's bad form to deny FQ before first pitch. Anyway I didn't ask but assume he would have stuck to his guns if I had.
So yeah, now I'm trying to figure out zone hitting again and losing lots of matches, so my rating is in the basement again so fingers crossed I won't be bumping into this guy anytime soon.
I also still haven't managed to prestige a hitter (all pitchers so far) but I'm close with Griffey so maybe I won't play as much online once I get some of these cards I've been working for. I don't know. It's mostly fun online but this was a bad experience.

Streamers and their chat typically fall into one category: complete and utter d@uchebags unless the streamer has a solid grip on not being that type of streamer. Unfortunately, those types of streamers are few and far between.
My advice, keep working on yourself to get better at the game and don't go into streams while you are playing OR after to review what they say about you. It won't end well.
-
best advice I can give is to not tune into a stream while your playing. it can really add to the pressure. I'm not sure your age but alot of streamers are younger with an even younger fanbase. alot of immature attitudes. we have all been smoked on stream . just keep practicing, don't let this 1 experience discourage you .

I just recently played a game where I was talking to the guy on messenger and being chill then he told me to watch his YouTube video and the title was something like “trash talker gets owned” yet there no talking at all in the vid so idk what he was talking about. He was mad I left the game before he could be toxic and replay ever single homerun and then antagonize me on top of it lol Oh well ️ I’ll let him have the W and he can keep his directional hitting too.

This is a shame and alot of reason i only watch a few streamers! But like everyone said play the game for just the sheer joy. Don't let them get to ya. The streamer is the worst person in this scenario and i hope karma bites them in the @ss!! Hang in there!!!

Just look at the people that stream. Koogs, shelfy, that moron with the huge nose, mcgunski.... pretty much any of the clowns that are partners, or were anyways. These guys have a stream full of people that bash and trash anyone and anything at all whenever they can and the streamers are just giant, self absorbed douche bags. I only watch one or two here and there because they are helpful and generally decent guys to talk with when they are playing but most are just so pathetic.
Does not shock me in any way that this Streamer would ask for a friendly to get out of getting mercied so he could play someone that was easier to play against. Save yourself the hassle and just avoid most of these idiots. Guys like him give online gaming such a horrible rep

streamers are conceited, for the most part.
the constant ****-sucking of other streamers/youtubers (clout chasers).
the phony 'hey man thanks for the follow, you de real hero!"
complaining when they lose (OhChev was nearly crying last week)
NOW, there are some decent streamers but I find most of them just generally look down upon their opponents (if they don't know them)
they also all stream the same type of content.
zone button hitting shippet park with some variance of a team build on DD or their BR runs.

Read the whole post!! He said he thought about it when he found out he was playing live and decided not to, but prior to him streamer friendly quit someone who was better than him. Then talked down to him. So yeah streamer is a douche!!

I know right and if you notice they all use the same distorted face on you tube like they all learned same editing trick. (which btw looks absolutely tacky)

Yeah this is correct...I never asked for the friendly even though I thought about it (only bc it was live, not bc it would be hard), but it was when I watched the recording of the stream back that I found out that A) he asked for a friendly on a hard match-up and got it before matching with me, and then B) saw my W-L and announced to his followers that there was no way he would accept a friendly req from me if I asked.

Don’t let that stuff bother you man. Just like he beat you. There is someone out there that will beat him. There is always someone better.
Do you have fun playing the game? At the end of the day. It’s a game dude we aren’t major leaguers we are playing a video game...and as competitive as we can get bad sportmanship on his part is not impressive to some of us.
Also don’t let his antics make you think that all streamers are like that. There are some really cool guys that break down at bats like CBrev that can help anyone get better with his pitch analysis and tendencies.

I do have lots of fun and haven't stopped going online, I mean I really do have some goals I've been chasing so I want to continue to try to meet those. If I'd been matched up against CBrev I think I would have been quite happy about it because I've watched quite a few of his vids so I would have felt a bit more comfortable with what was going to happen. I'd never heard of the streamer who matched up with me which is why I got nervous about playing live.
On reflection I don't think he said anything too terrible directly (it was one of his viewers who said the(wrote) most directly insulting thing) but finding out about the FQ 'manipulation' did leave a bad taste. Oh well, I mean, I could have just quit directly if I'd wanted out of there badly enough. In the end I knew it was live-streamed and kept playing.
Someone DM'd me and asked for the link and I did provide it, so if anyone does want to see as corroboration of what I've written, I'm happy to provide the link (it's openly published anyway). I just don't want to put the streamer's name directly in this thread.

And apologies to those who've taken the time to give great advice here; I haven't replied to everyone but appreciate all the replies! I'm pretty chuffed to read so much support for what happened.

Aye, I hate to see this. It's a video game friend, don't let it be so serious that it hurts your mental health!
No one knows who you are, no need to take any of this personally. If it truly causes you this much emotional stress, I'd take a break, or find a different game/way to play.
-
@cbpm72_PSN Some advice for online if you don’t have a monitor and play on a tv the input lag is a killer and you won’t realize how bad it is until you play one AB on a monitor. Total game changer for getting good timing on swings. With the input lag you basically have to swing earlier than you want to square it up. Control freaks also help especially with the high inside fastballs or anyone with an outlier fastball.

Ah no, I'm not affected to that degree of negativity. I just thought it might be nice to share what happened. Some of it sucked but I'm not affected negatively in terms of my mental health or anything like that. I'm glad I know what happened as opposed to being clueless of the events.

Thank you, I've been hearing a lot about playing on a monitor, as well as using the control freaks. I've actually also noticed a huge benefit to switching back to zone hitting after using directional for a couple of months (as I was during this match) in that the PCI helps with tunnelling pitches and that's been huge for my timing getting better already, even after only a couple of days. I'm going to try to get a monitor as soon as I can.
