Now that we know the "Runner on 2nd in Extras" is in play again for 2021...
-
Will this transition into MLBTS21 or are we playing with traditional rules? I'd imagine SDS is waiting for the CBA agreement in 22?
-
I hope not. Maybe, but I hope not. I won't be that mad if it happens, since it's an IRL rule, but god what a stupid rule it is. Same goes for 7 inning double headers. Why? I understood it last year when the schedule was so condensed, but in a full 6 month schedule? It's just stupid.
-
I doubt it will transition into MLB21—the devs didn't include the DH for games, and they didn't do the runner on 2nd rule last year, so I doubt they'll add it in.
Whether they have it in the game or not, I disagree with their decision to do it again this year, for a full season. I know the vaccinations and things will take a while, but still, I feel this rule impacts the game too much, y'know what I mean? Maybe they'll phase it out, I don't know.
-
If you think ALL 9 inning games are a Playoff like game and in the Playoffs there is no runner rule
-
A lot of people liked the 7 inning doubleheader. Myself included.
The runner on 2nd is odd, but who wants 20 inning games? There would be some long extra inning games for sure. MLB doesn't want that.
SDS should add the runner in 2nd in extras as well, but keep it out of DD like the DH. -

A question for all the statheads:
Would it still be a perfect game if the only runner was on due to the "extra inning rule". The pither(s) could still face the minimum amount of batters, not letting anyone reach base successfully, and even give up a run or lose. It would be no fault of the pitcher to face the previous 27, and allow a sacrifice, and sac fly/squeeze to score the run.
This is a question we have debated for years in fastpitch softball with the runner starting on second. Common sense says no, but technically, the pitcher never allowed anyone to reach base.

No. As soon as the runner is added to 2b, the perfecto is lost.

But if they retired every batter they faced for the entirity of the game, isnt that the definition of perfection?
So I did check into it earlier, and found this statement from 2018:
MLB's Vice President of Stats Cory Schwartz reached out with a Tweet to clarify that auto-runners do not count to eliminate a perfect game by their understanding, even if that is counter to the official MLB definition of a perfect game
Also, found this article:
https://www.barstoolsports.com/blog/2606025/under-mlbs-2020-rules-a-pitcher-could-throw-a-perfect-game-and-loseIt seems counter intuitive, and that is why it is interesting to discuss or argue about it.

I fail to see why this wouldn't still be a perfect game. Your performance as a pitcher was still perfect in that you faced and retired the minimum number of batter possible under the rules of the game. Just because the rules say a runner starts on 2nd in the 10th doesn't somehow negate the fact that your inputs to the outcome were flawless.

what a stupid rule it is
I agree man. That runner on 2nd is pretty much guaranteed to score. At least make it LITTLE bit tougher. Like runner first, or don't start until the 12th inning.
-
It’s a terrible rule imo.. idk why they’re keeping it

If they’re almost guaranteed to score for the away team, then they’re almost guaranteed to score for the home team as well. Except 2/3 of the time one of them won’t, or won’t score as many Looks like 68% of the extra innings games last year were decided in the 10th.
I don’t know about you but if I’m going to watch at least 140 games a year, I would like to spend under 3 1/2 hours a day doing so. I’ve got work to do. My wife would appreciate it too.

So, the way I'm reading this, the only way a runner could score and a pitcher faces 30 batters and gets 30 consecutive outs (Not 27 cause this is an Extra Innings situations so the pitcher would have to pitch 10 innings) would be on throwing errors...I.E. Pickoff attempts, Past Balls, Wild Pitches...correct?? So an E would negate a perfect game.

I get that but putting the runner on first would still significantly shorten games.
