Fielding grounders

I'm having issues with my fielders not attempting to pick up ground balls. I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong it seems sometimes they do and sometimes they dont. I had a soft grounder last night roll right past my second basemen feet and then right past my centerfielder all the way to the warning track. This was an easy out turned into a double. These are balls in range that are too close to dive for. How do you veteran's get your guys to field these easy balls??? I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong or the game is just causing my guys to occasionally whiff on easy groundouts. Am I supposed to do something to manually scoop it up in those scenarios?
