Righty-Lefty Matchup Question
-
Just curious about some thoughts on the balance between a reliever’s “skill” versus the batter’s preferred pitcher type. As an example, say 95 Rickie Henderson or 99 Barry Larkin, who crush lefties but suck versus righties. Ignoring the details of any given pitcher, would you be better off having, say, a 95 overall lefty face them or an 85 overall righty? How about an 80 overall righty? Where is that tipping point if you will? Obviously the dynamic would be same for a guy like 96 Ellsbury from the other side of the plate. As I continue to squander leads late in ballgames, I’m starting to wonder if I’m approaching these situations the right way. Cheers!!

I think it really depends on the skill of the opponent. Some people really struggle same side (especially lefty/lefty), some don't.
In general, I want my best reliever out there, I will play matchups at times, 95 Mcgee isn't going to face righties if I can help it, but I don't really care if 97 Chapman faces a righty.
Hope that makes sense.

Agreed. Depends on the repertoire.
I find lefties with changeups and cutters I have less of a problem having them face righties.. McGee for example I would avoid.
Same goes for righties pitching vs lefties. -
