I have Brendan McKay as my fifth starter, even though I have better options. Typically, I only use him for games my starter gets destroyed in early and extra inning games because he can hit and I won’t need a PH

For me it truly depends how the games unfold. If you play 4 complete games where your starters go 7+ innings then you do need that 5th starter. If you have a couple games where the guy quits early then you don’t. Just depends on the games.

That is called using an opener, and I almost always do it. The 5th starter for me is usually a "closer". most of the year it's been Kopech.

    Nice strategy... smh

Thanks? In the 1924 World Series (game 7), the Washington Senators used a RHP for 2 batters before bringing in a LHP. In the 1990 NLCS the Pirates used a "relief pitcher" to start the game. The 1993 Oakland A's rotation was so bad, Tony and Dave platooned guys all year in order to win as many as possible. Dave Fleming, a writer for Bill James, started talking about the advantage of using guys for 3 innings max in 2009, he called it the 3-3-3 rule. Baseball didn't recognize saves as a stat until 1969, and Baseball didn't use a 5 man rotation until the early 1980s.

This isn't a new concept, the video game just finally caught up.

    Billy Heywood over here

I'm kidding. Baseball knowledge is cool.

I personally LOVE the creativity that choosing SPs and being able to use SPs in relief brings. If ranked seasons is going to have an ELO system AND Skill Based Matchmaking AND RNG AND DDA, you bet your a** I am going to use everything in my power to win and that's how it should be. Every single game is do or die, but also when a Starter throws 90+ pitches, it should take them 3.5+ games to be able to reach max energy. And hte energy should slowly build back, not in large chunks. The first two days after pitching, the pitcher should gain ZERO energy back because realistically your arm is not recovered at all yet, it is repairing all the damage.

I use my 5th starter as an extra bullpen arm.
