I kinda feel like so many people don't actually know what real baseball is by their posts.

If a pitcher could only throw balls and get the batter to swing at it the majority of the time, they would do so in RL.

You have to prove you can consistently lay off pitches, no one is going to walk you 3 times in a row etc, they will throw it in the zone if you make them.

It's not my job to throw you a hittable pitch, it's your job to force me to throw one.

Umm a pitcher would do that every pitch if a hitter had that type of approach.. and if you have a good eye then move along and take the walk. They ain’t sexy but can win you the game. That’s all that matters. And the more you take when someone plays like that your bound to get a fat one soon

How long have you been playing the game ? This game takes time to be good at and get a good eye. Even if you ask the best players at this game very few had a good first year at the game. But fixing it is up to you and the amount of time you want to practice and get better. Every decent player at this game is going to exploit you at the plate if they find out you can’t hit a certain pitch, or can’t lay off bad pitches.

I have alot of trouble with same handed pitching and will swing at junk. The number 1 thing that works for me is a pick a spot and sit on that high fastball. If its not a high fastball I dont swing until he has two strikes on me. If you get walked you should be able to steal any base if they are throwing alot of off speed junk balls

I’ve found the only strikes you should throw is directly down the middle. Hard af to hit.

I’m not trying to pile on with the “just don’t swing” takes, but honestly, nothing will make you more successful at this game than learning to lay off bad pitches (not even balls - even pitches on the black that usually lead to outs, which is worse than a strike). Good players understand that developing that discipline is hard, and most players don’t have it, so of course they will use it to their advantage.

I’m by no means elite, but Showdowns actually helped me a ton with this, because the only way to succeed is lay off pitches until you get one to drive.

I know it’s frustrating, but you can’t really fault the pitchers for exploiting a hitter’s lack of plate discipline.

Couldn’t have said it better myself...

In real life, every pitcher does this. It's called expanding the zone.
Every. Single. Pitcher will expand on what a hitter will swing at. If you show you're impatient, you'll never get a pitch in the zone to swing at. A pitcher would be stupid to do so. On an 0-2 count, you'll never see a strike in the zone. The object of pitching is to minimize chances plain and simple. If you can lay off bad pitches, then it's on you. Especially in real life

I think part of the different between real baseball and video game baseball is I could tell right away if a ball if going to be in the dirt or at my eyes in real baseball. I do struggle on a screen to make that same determination, mostly with balls below the zone.

With major league calibre pitching, you wouldn't be able to tell that well at all. Major league hitters can't...

I think MLB average strike percentage is about 62%, leaning towards 66% with higher end pitchers. Presumably that includes swinging strikes.

The other factor not really mentioned in this discussion is pitch count. Without a doubt, if you are nibbling around the zone you will not pitch as deep into the game. Considering the current meta is to use starters in relief, this is not a consideration for many players.

I think David Price, when he was at the top of his game summed it up best when he said he wanted the hitter out or on base in four pitches.

Pitching to contact is a thing, but you don’t see much of it in this game.

Everyone struggles with pitching and getting strikeouts. Most just pitch in the zone and pray for weak contact to get outs.

So to be good you have to throw 90% balls and hope the opponent swings at them? It used to b in strikeout counts you would do that not every [censored] pitch, and I’m tired of hearing well don’t swing at it.. is this the new strategy, and no I’m not weak or crying just seeing what people got to say

I’ll tell you why it happens, because you swing at everything and I’m not going to reward you for having no plate discipline...
