It is dumb you can only ever get a 1 year contract length.

First 6 years the team has control that renews yearly the first 4 and then you’re eligible for arbitration the last two. But you can sign for the full 5 or more after year 1, I do it all the time. When you hit free agency you get offers up to 12 years

so technically pre free agency you can get 6+years contracts BUT you have to have insane stats and feats AND you have to be the only viable choice for your position otherwise they will at best offer you a 2 year deal which is usually around 10-15k less than if you accepted two 1 year contracts

I have never once been able to sign a long term deal before free agency. And, believe me, I have tried ... repeatedly.

Every single offseason, I've tried to negotiate a deal (and not a stupid Soto or Tucker deal) well within the realm of reality (sometimes for the arbitration amount the team is offering). Every single time they refuse and give me some nonsense about the team not having the budget room (even though they have a $600M budget and $400M budget room).

They have never once agreed to a deal until my free agent year. If you can offer suggestions how to get the team to accept a deal before then, I'd love to know how.

As a footnote, I would have signed for $10-$15M/year for 10+ years just because of team loyalty ...

instead I sign for $40M with the Yankees or something because they were cheap. 🤣

I have not found a consistent way to get the good offers i usually just go year to year until free agency.
I have had 2 players get 5+ year contracts pre free agency one was a closer and the other was a starter and both won rookie of the year the closer got the reliever of the year and the starter got the cy young award.
