Anybody doing theme teams ?!?!?
-
Like every year, I am doing theme teams playing 3 games a piece with every team … starting with the worst. I just finished the Nationals, so I am 7 teams (21 games) in … I only had 1 theme team (Angels vs my Athletics) going against me. ALL the other teams were those boring switch-hitter/god squad teams … Also: Close to nobody is using captain cards
So, during the course of this game cycle I asked multiple times and got the answer, that sets&seasons limits people from using theme teams … As of right now, I am not experiencing this „wish from the community“.
Are you doing theme teams? How is it going for you ? …
I had the most fun using the A‘s … going 3-0 and pitching my tail of (with those crazy arms … they do not have many :)). Next one is the Blue Jays … I really love it
-
I’ve done it in the past offline to see how many runs I can score with each team. This is a good idea though. Only problem is regardless of the team it’s still my thumbs playing lol

sets and seasons my limit theme teams, but the real reason people don't use them is they aren't perceived as meta.
It was kind of depressing how few people used theme teams in the winter event that was designed for theme teams. The Mets team was great in that one. Oh no, you need to use a 97 Nimmo! Who with captain boosts hits as well as any 99 in the game without a team captain boost.
Also an issue with theme teams is the Mets are one of the very few teams with fully functional bullpens. No live series needed. Really the amount of relief pitcher cards needs to be at bare minimum doubled.
But back to the main point, people dont use theme teams simply because people are lame and feel the need to use teams perceived as meta, regardless of sets and seasons.
-
As a side note, since wins are meaningless in ranked for mediocre players I used a Mets theme team as early as season 1. Brooks Raley silver is my closest card to p5 to this day because of this (and BR) and I think his ERA is still around 2.

I think you nailed it with this … There are people (you probably included ) that suffer from S&S building their theme-teams.
I played a few more games … People have Mickey batting 9th, because their lineup is too absurdly good … My conclusion (of this year/the complaints) is this: Sets and Seasons limits players from using the meta cards in later seasons … they did not have those cards until late summer each year, so they complained earlier this year and blamed it on S&S … I am really looking forward to to next year … power creep and no meta god quads until late of the year (this is my hope )
Another conclusion: Nobody wants lineup diversity. It is all about the meta (and yes, I am over-exaggerating a little bit … so no offense to some theme team guys in here )
-
to be clear (and I am guilty of not making this difference even in this thread), sets and seasons is not remotely an issue. Sets are good, more cards is always going to be better. Seasons are good. Its just innings in a different name.
The issue is the TCGesque lineup restrictions. For as scummy as it is, NBA2K25 has sets and seasons but does not have these restrictions

I almost exclusively play with Angels theme team , except a few games .

I think I'm going to do the negro league theme team next with the new captain.
-
Any theme team standout as the best so far?
-
The Yankees boosts vision.
Brst boost by far imo. -

Hilton Smith + Corbin Carroll is pretty good.

Just finished my 3-game Rangers-turn … Last game was a blast. I was up against JohnD with Rocker on the mound for my squad … First inning, 2-run-HR against me … but I climbed back, hitting 3-PPs against JohnD … the last one with Rangers-Soriano who I put in earlier in RF out of position … managed to get the save with Nathan on a 3-2 win … My opponent had Mantle and Aaron on the Bench on his god squad … Rangers-series was 2-1 …
Next ones: Rays (fingers crossed for a right-handed starter since the captains do not boost contact vs LHP) … then Giants (looks like a very good squad), Red Sox and Twins

Dodgers team is really good.
-
Today I faced two theme teams … unfortunately the guy facing me with his yankee team did not want to lose on a 9 Inning game against the Red Sox (I do not like them … I had to do it for the tradition) …
The others were the Guardians -

I save them up for last … Next up: 3-game-Twins-set … I like the lineup very much with Cornerstone Buxton manning CF and Mauer, Polanco, Carew in the Lineup

This is a great idea with the 3 game series. I’m going to try that out.

Do it, it has made me play the game much much more. BUT: Be prepared to get frustrated and/or bringing in some bronze pitchers … it ist still fun

How many teams have full bullpens like the Mets?

I find I have more fun using non meta teams simply because I don't really care if I win. When I use the God squad I'm sweaty palm sweaty pits and just trying too hard
Downside is I don't have familiarity with alot of swings outside of my God squad as I try to do the foot kick/stride timing method. Works much better when you're used to swings

Since I started with the worst (and I am at the Cubs) … none … BUT: Some silvers and even bronzes did their job since they get massives boosts from their captains.
To answer your question some more: I do not know for now but I suppose all the playoff-teams should have a very good one
