Trouble Fielding Low Throws To First

I’m playing RTTS on Switch and positioned at first base. When someone throws a low throw that I have to scoop up there is a red circle with an L in the center. The red circle moves then disappears an I miss/drop the ball. I can’t figure this out. Does anyone have any tips/info?

treat it like pulse pitching, hit the button when the circle is small and it will catch it

For me it's just I gotta move the left thumbstick to the circle and press the random assigned button (on Xbox it's A,B,X,Y). Which is fairly simple and you can always do it before time runs out.
