The 30-40k packs GUARANTEE either an 89 or 92. If we are comparing to Madden at launch where max ovr is 87, they have 100k coin legend packs that you have a chance at getting only 78s. I opened a lot of them on Madden that were only 78s. For comparison sake, if those Madden packs were like the MLB packs, they would guarantee either an 87 full legend or an 84 that goes into the legend sets. The season 1 pack is 30k. The least valuable card you can get is Jonah heim and he goes for 13k. Your MAX loss is ≈ 18k after the 10% tax if you sell. You can also profit ≈60k with an O’Neil Cruz. On madden, you can have a loss of 90k with a legends pack. Not to mention, MLB also has 1:5 odds of rare round, which comes out to 20% chance at the high ovr. Madden gives you about a 5% chance at the max ovr pull. Packs on MLB don’t even compare to the trash Madden puts out. Then with flipping and everything, it’s a lot easier to recover your losses on MLB than it is Madden. MLB spoiled everyone in 21 to make the whole player base think everyone should get everything, and that’s just not reality.

Maybe not but there is no denying that they are steering their ship more heavily towards monetization.

While these packs may not be as bad as other games there is still no denying the fact that SDS wants you to gamble with your stubs, because odds are that you are getting a card that is worth less than what the pack cost.

They even made it worse with the season awards pack. It is not even a choice pack so even if you get the lower tier you can't choose which card you want.

Honestly I think packs are the one area that Madden is better than The Show. When I would buy a bundle in Madden, I don’t think I’ve ever gotten less than 600k coins. Whereas in The Show I can’t tell you how many times I buy a 50 pack & pull no diamonds and maybe one or two golds. I have also never pulled a premium round choice in choice packs - And I’m talking since they’ve been around, Not just this year. Maybe I’m just unlucky but I HATE opening packs in DD.

I disagree with that as well. If anything, the new season awards has added content. Now, my opinion on this can change. But, we only had a weekend of games and they put out 4 cards in the reward path and an additional 5 in the pack. If that is increased with a full week of games, it’s a W. In years past, we would get 4 Topps now players per week, which were sellable but also were required to be collected for the lightning player. Then monthly awards would give 4 low ovr guys, 3 mid, then the 1 lightning players. In a 4 week month, that would 16 Topps now players and 8 monthly award cards, totaling 24 cards a month from the program. Let’s say they add 1 player to the reward path and 1 player to the pack each week with full weeks of games. That would be 5 players on the reward path and 6 in the pack for 3 weeks, on top of what we already have. That would be 43 cards added in the month for the program, which is a significant increase. I think they need to add 1 free pack to the reward path as well, that way everyone can open at least 1 without spending stubs, but outside of that, I don’t know how anyone considers this an L

Yes but Madden juices points packs. No hate for spending money in game, I used to all the time. But I think it’s ridiculous that Madden has two different in game currencies for buying packs, and you can only buy bundles with points, where you HAVE to spend money. You can only get single packs with coins. At least in DD, you can earn stubs and open a bundle with a chase pack. There’s also a lot more ways in DD to earn stubs than earning coins in madden. The only thing I feel Madden does a better job of is rewarding people that spend money on the game. On DD, in my opinion, there’s no benefit to spending money. On madden, there are many benefits.

Packs/pack cards are not content. They are stub sinks. You can't earn them. You buy them.

In years past you earned all the available cards in the Topps Now/MA programs. Now you cannot do that since to get all the cards you have buy some (it's too early to tell what % of the cards will be pack only. More than half in Drop 1 but that doesn't mean anything conclusive....yet).

Oh, and the most important point - Stop comparing SDS to EA or 2K. Compare the Show to prior versions of the Show. Madden, FIFA, NHL, 2K have no bearing on these discussions. Ever.

@Skarmaen yeah but you don't need the cards in the pack for the Lightning collection.

I don't think the issue is that the 30k-40k packs exist and the contents may or may not be undesirable. The issue is that they only way to obtain a pack is to purchase it. Do not even offer a pack in the program. It's a lot like when MA awards where in Packs but they weren't Choice Packs. You could only by 5 of them and could end up pulling the same card 5 times, but were required to collect them all in order to complete the program.

Do the packs add new cards into the game? Yes. Therefore, they are new content. Just because you don’t like how they are earned doesn’t mean they aren’t content. And like I said in my above post. They aren’t perfect, they definitely need to add at least 1 free pack in the reward path. And no cards from the pack are required to complete the program. It’s just added cards.

SDS, EA, and 2K are all game developers that make sports games with an online card collecting mode, so yes I will continue to compare them and yes, they all do affect each other bc they are trying to get players to play their games over the others. They are competitors. That’s like saying don’t compare Walmart to target.

I agree the pack needs to be in the reward path, but it’s not a lot like that at all, because none of these cards are required to complete the program. They are just added cards.

Isn’t that the world we live in. I have a phone app for when I’m sitting in numerous waiting rooms since that seem routine lately and every time I log into the app I see at minimum 3 tabs for ads for to purchase packs for boosters.

Come on now.... I played Madden a lot and while Madden isn't as bad as its basketball iteration, MLB The Show gives out so many free cards and stubs for grinding. If you wanted free packs you could play mini seasons over and over. Get 40 hits with TA1 players and pitch 25 innings with TA1 pitchers and get 20 packs for free. What other games let you do that I wish MLBTS did was let you trade cards. Losing 10% of a cards value on a sale is something I will never understand.

@fellspointguy_MLBTS Trading cards would be great. I’ve said this before as well. They have point values after all so it can be done.

The trending towards stub only packs means potentially they may do a monthly subscription one day. Similar to GTA. $5 a month gets you one of every new pack and 20 packs a month or whatever.

They have always done this, its the power creep model, as the game builds up more packs will be in programs.
