The AI doesn't always hose you

I was playing a game last night when a screaming liner was getting ready to split my outfielders for a double or better. I'm flying over to the gapper as fast as Harper can move his feet (which isn't super fast) and realize I'm not going to get there with my selected player...my CF Yoshida (again, not selected) comes flying out of nowhere and makes a diving circus catch.
Now, would that be AI manipulation? I did win that particular game. Or is that what non-selected defenders are supposed to do? Asking for a friend.
